For the next several weeks...I will draw one name per week from all the individuals who submit a picture of themselves with their favorite Merkel firearm. The picture needs to be accompanied by a brief description (50 word max) of why your Merkel is your favorite gun.

Friends ask why I collect and hunt with my Merkel's; the answer--they connect me with a heritage of hunting began with European ancestors and settlers on the American frontier. Quite frankly, Merkel rifles make me a better hunter--demanding of myself that I take game cleanly with one shot. My Merkel Model 8 began its performance by helping train a German Wirehair pup and ended the season with a long shot requiring a longer retrieve by that much wiser dog. Five kinds of birds in five states--one great dog and one great shotgun! His name is Bravo (Rooster Ridge's Doc Holiday). He pointed more birds than any dog of any age in the NAVHDA Aug 2000 test in Colorado.

I was very pleased to receive a MERKEL 147EL SxS, 20 bore with 30" barrel for my last duck hunt at Pintail Peninsula in Arkansas. The quality and performance of this SxS was well beyond my expectations. The one in the photo was high and fast, yet was no match for my 30". Easily the most impressive shotgun ever lifted to my shoulder.

My first Merkel was and is my favorite gun, a Model 8 20 gauge. We have hunted together since 1996 and "Itty-Bitty" is just as tight as the first day she came home. My boys both quarrel over who gets to hunt with Itty-Bitty but Dad always wins the decision. We like the Model 8 so much that we acquired a sibling for her earlier this year- Model 280, 28 gauge.
