I'm with the Navajos. Governments here are hooked on casinos as well as the Mik'maqs. A 28-year-old conservative friend Ian Coll waged an unsuccessful campaign against gambling called People Against Casinos. But even supported by the biggest petition in the province's history, with support from churches, labour, home and school associations, the Legion, co-ops and credit unions, PAC was ignored by the Liberal government. Ian's grandfather brought Muskol to market, 25 per cent DEET.

James, for all of that, no one group has come ahead here as fast as First Nations. The awful stuff is still going around. The chief' salaries are unconscionable. Their governance is improving steadily. When I started working directly with them 45-plus years ago, we'd be lucky to get five or six to a meeting, never it seemed with one fully sober. Within 15 years I was invited to their meetings of 50 or 60 starting at 9a sharp, all ready for business.
