G.B. Chambers passed away at least ten years ago, I don't recall exactly when, but he had an apparent heart failure while driving his p/u and coasted into a tree off the roadside near his home. To the best of my knowledge he was the primary gunsmith for 'Whitter's' gun shop or sporting goods in Dallas for many years; they closed in the late 50's I think. I'm not sure what he did before that, but he was an active gunsmith w/a reputation for good work when I first heard his name & that was in the 60's. He worked as an independant gunsmith after his time w/Whitter's for many years, out of at least two different locations, the last Dallas location was in a small industrial park off Wallnut Hill Ln. [zip 75220] After he closed that location in the late 70's or early 80's he retired/moved to the country somewhere not too far from Dallas and that may well have been to Prarie View, but I never visited him out there.

FWIW, we attended the Speer Matches together when they were held in Austin,Tx. one year. That was in '73, I think. He was a serious shooter and accomplished gunsmith, a fine rifle smith and built a number of guns over the years, some signed and others not. Some of his sporting rifle stock work was in the 'classic' form and some was not, the later leaning to target 'thinking' or being more for 'from a blind' as opposed to 'stalking'. I want to say he was shooting a 222.5 in the heavy varmint class at those particular Speer matches, but he also had some wildcats that were his own. And he shot in the unlimited class as well. He once stocked a Beretta 'Golden Snipe' shotgun for me to dimensions I supplied. He fabricated parts when necessary for assorted stuff, did trigger jobs &c. for some of my rifle projects, was never w/o an opinion and never ran me out of his shop like he did to more than one person ;-)

Everet Hayden(sp?)former executive w/Republic Nat'l. Bank in Dallas was his long time shooting partner in bench rest matches. I think they hunted some together as well.

Perhaps something here will prove of value to you.

kind regards, tw
