There was an earlier William Cartwright. But he did not fit the time period of this gun. He was active circa 1800 - 1815, in time for the Napoleonic campaigns. The English gun industry thrived during this early period then went into a deep recession as Europe became more peaceful.

If the dates I have above are correct, then the gun is easily dated to between 1859-1880.
