Entablature probably comes from the French meaning tabling, where the lumps and flats form one unit, with concave recesses on the upper side where the tubes are "sat" and brazed. I guess the American term is shoe lump?

The only SXS I ever saw with such a lump was an early FAMARS.

Shotgunlover;
Thank you, I don't know any French, but from the term table in there I wondered if that might be the case. Shoe Lump is the term Burrard used for this method of joining, so it may be more English than American. I have a J P Sauer & Son / V L & D Knockabout sidelock with this type of lump. Only one I can recall having seen. I may of course over the years seen others & just didn't note their construction.

Sauer’s American patent drawings of their “shoe lump”. Amazing craftsmanship. Notice the barrels have small male dovetails to twist into the lump, securely holding them before brazing. Very strong design but required gap between the barrels results in bulkier frame.

Joe;
Thanks for that patent link. I will have to look at mine real close, but I don't recall noticing these joints. They must have turned the barrels in from the center so the joint would be invisible after the top rib was installed. Mine was a heavier gun, 30" @ 7˝ lbs. it has a leather covered cheek piece with the comb hollowed out beneath it & filled with what appears to be cork. I got it as a project gun with forend missing but have done nothing with it yet.
