With the difficulty of finding new tubes to sleeve with, could orphan barrels be used economically? I know there is a lot of work to strip everything off the old barrels and machine to fit the mono-block, but. A quality set of orphan barrels can sometime be found at a reasonable price. Has anyone tried this?

Not enough thickness in the back of the tubes for sleeving. At least this is typically the case. Unless the barrel set is super heavyweight.

Oscar used to use pump gun barrels he would buy from Numrich. They were for discontinued models.

If my memory is correct someone in the 80s was using 870 Remington barrels.

As explained to me, the problem with using orphaned barrels is that the chamber is already cut so you have a rather thin sleeve of metal to weld into the breech piece. Also the barrels are usually fairly un-concentric back there so you would be very lucky to get the right amount of metal thickness in all the right places.
Not impossible providing the the barrels are a good heavy set but probably more trouble than it is worth. Sleeving tunes still readily available from Italy, I believe.

Some bbls from single shot break open type shotguns can lend themselves to the use. Especially the smaller gauges as they are typicaly a bit heavier to be used on some not so petite single shot frames.
Kind of the same idea of dis-assembling a set of SxS tubes to get what you want. But getting two singles of the same can be a challenge unless you happen into a pile of NOS or similar at a place like Numrich

About 10-12 years ago, I bought some unfinished and unchambered 20 gauge barrels from Dixie Gun Works in Union City, Tenn.

I haven't gotten a catalog from them for awhile, so don't know if they might still sell them.
