I have a J.P. Sauer .16 ga., grade 40, made in 1911/12 according to Jim Cate. It has 26" barrels, ivory bead, splinter forend w/ebony tip, side clips, fully engraved with game scenes, ejectors, pistol grip, dbl. triggers. It retains some case coloring and 95% blueing, bores excellent, IC and Mod. I know the provenance of the gun. Original owner Gorden VanderBeek and brother of L.I., later sold to NY detective R. Connell in mid 1960's from whom I purchased it in 2005. I have no intention of selling the gun but would like to establish a realistic value for it for estate purposes. I'm getting old. I have been unable to locate any correlated values, and the Blue Book gives none. Griffin and Howe offered $3500 for the gun in 2005 to R. Connell, so I'm assuming it has additional value. Any thoughtful observations would be much appreciated.

I'm sure it's a nice gun, but pictures would help with a valuation.

As best I can recall, smallbore Grade 40's are quite rare. I know of one Cabela's sold about 2 years ago, also a 16, for about $7500.

Julia's website, research section, shows a few Model 40s, but you must register and sign in to get prices. The linked gun sold for $6325.00.
