Ed:

Here's a bit of info: "American Arms Company Manufacturers of shotguns and two shot Wheeler patent derringers. In Boston, Massachusetts from 1873 to 93, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1893 until they were purchased by Marlin Firearms Company in 1901."
For some reason I think that on another thread Mr. Robert Chambers identified it as a NY company also.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

Gopher:

Check the proof marks on the underside of the barrels for Belgian proof marks. I seem to recall that the NY guns were Belgian made and imported. Though I could be way off on this, my recollections are getting fuzzy.

Here is more info:
"American Arms Co was formed about 1870 by George Henry Fox of Boston. Mr. Fox worked at American Nut and Arms Co. to produce nuts and Wheeler's patented revolvers prior to forming his company, American Arms Co. He continued to produce pistols and shotguns and introduced a side swinging double barreled shotguns (around 1870) until 1873, when the company went out of business, but was reorganized in 1877. Later on, the company produced shotguns under A. E. Whitmores 1888 patent, and still later on, the company established a factory at Bluffton, Alabama. The factory was actually part of a land promotional deal organized by eastern investors to promote tourist and industry trade. Mr. Fox's involvement was transistory, and the whole scheme soon collapsed. Fox continued to make guns until his death in 1901. Some have stated that Fox also opened a factory in Milwaukee in 1893, but researchers say he did not. There is a picture of the side-swing model double barrel in Side by Sides of the World for Y2K." Which is from: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=67054 .

As well as another site w/ info: http://www.american-firearms.com/america...%20Co-1861.html .

I'm still looking for the NY info. I remember now thru the Alabama connection as some were stamped "Alabama".

Kind Regards,

Raimey

That gun would have been made by Crescent. They made many guns under different names that were sold through the hardware store industry.

Hiya gopher, and welcome.
Not to hijack here, but didn't American Arms make the old Knickerbocker too?

The Crescent guns were American gun company not American Arms.
