I have an opportunity to buy a new Holland and Holland Royal 20 Gauge cased from the early eighties. It is worth it to consolidate down to a smaller number of guns to have the Holland? I love the gun but I am just not sure of what to do. I would have to sell several of my best 10k pieces to get it. I can put some money on it but it would be tough to give up part of them. Any perspectives? Thanks, HuntersDad

I hope yoy find the answer to the question. It has escaped me for the last 30 years. Each time I upgrade I feel the same pain until the new piece arrives and I start over again. I'm on a 5 year cycle. How about you?

My perspective with doubles is to have the guns that provide the most pleasure in the field or blind. If I had disposable income of your dimensions, my perspective would be the same: the Royal wouldn't be me, and my friends don't believe we are what we own. I wasn't born with these values; they came the hard way. You're probably as other members here, with guns in your rack that mean more to you as workhorses than any thoroughbred. Another thing I learned from experience: if you're not sure of what to do, don't do it. Regards, King

Huntersdad, I had to make the same decision a couple of years ago. I finally traded 17 nice doubles for one very nice double. It really hurt to see them go. It took years of trading, saving, and dealing to get them. Two years later, I am not sorry I made the trade.Go for it,you can always trade back down.

I would keep what I shoot best and trade/sell the rest (unless it has some strong sentimental or high collector value).

I'm a shooter first and a collector a distant second. If you get it make sure it fits you properly. It would be a mighty bitter pill to swallow to trade guns you can shoot for a gun you can not shoot.

I'm affraid the right answer really will come down to what you value most, and that's something only you can answer. Good luck with whatever you choose.

One quality piece is worth more than a handful of lessers.
Now that maybe a high conditioned Sterlingworth, or a handsome H&H Royal. That one gun, is the backbone of your cabinet.

Really depends on how much you love that H&H, how much you'll use it compared to other guns in your collection...etc...etc...etc. Frankly, If you have multiple $10K guns already in the cabinet, you're probably splitting hairs when it comes to quality. As with all things we collect and enjoy, it's a personal decision. I wouldn't buy anything just because it's more expensive than something else. Since you already have nice guns, I'd say you have a problem few of the rest of us will ever have...the choice is completely yours.

I am just starting to build a modest collection of work horse guns - Citoris, Winchester 101s, etc, so I don't have the perspective of the more experienced on this forum. However, I would say that you can only shoot one gun at a time, so I would rather have one "great" gun than a bunch of "just good" guns.

(of course, this assumes that the one great gun fits you and is appropriate for your shooting activities, etc.)

Much depends on the future of things. This thought sucks, but it easer to register one piece then many. I have: two O/U (12ga & 28ga), one 12ga SxS, one 12ga pump, and 12ga self-loader, so as you see I have nothing to spare. If all my guns were SxSs I would dump them for that H&H but in 12br.
