Anyone recognise this buttplate?

This is side view.

I am very sorry for camera/phone pics but was tight on time and just happened to stumble upon this walking past the Gun Library! Gun is 16ga with a simple thumbprint type damascus. Very tight and clean. It has almost no markings on the barrel or action flats...maybe a barrel supplier mark on each tube and one small squiggle on action flat.

Thats it!

One strange thing is, it seems to be unfired and has what appear to be stepped chambers AND forcing cones along with a step in one of the chokes. Otherwise completly finished with nice simple scrolls that look Belgian/turn of century.

Again, I know this is a longshot with the cruddy photos and no pics of marks but I was blown away by the condition of the gun.

Best,
Mark

It looks to be a likeness of Herkules, the J.P. Sauer & Sohn mark.

Thanks Raimey, I will look that up. It depicts a man holding a large club and says someting or other and "marke" under his feet, I think.

Best,
Mark

Look in a J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl cataloge(1924) where Hercules(I may have spelled the action version previously) w/ a staff is over "Gesetzlich Eingetragene Schultzmarke".

Kind Regards,

Mark:

Did the "small squiggle" on the watertable resemeble an intertwined "SSu" - Sauer & Sohns, Suhl or a circle w/ 3 "S"s in rotation? I've been doing a little research on August Gottlieb Schuler, Friedrich Schuler & son Oskar Schuler. Somewhere there are frames stamped "ASS"(August Schuler Suhl). Makes you think about naming a kid. Most of the material is sourced from "The Greenhill Dictionary of Guns and Gunmakers" which in a review Mr. D. Apel said that it did have some errors.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

The lack of any other proof marks is good evidence that it's German (no proof law before 1891) and Hercules with a club is down town Sauer as Raimey mentioned. Glorious condition!

Thank you all very much!

Cannot imagine why the lack of a name on it though.....was worth taking credit for.

Best,
Mark
