OT I have two Winchester 1897's that I would like to have brought back to as close to factory new as possible. Both are in pretty decent condition but I would like to add to the "Pretty" part.Who does the very best work on refinishing Winchesters includin the wood??
Best Regards

You might check out these folks. I have not used them, but have used some of their products with success.

I just had a Win Mod 1912 Tournament Grade redone by Freddy Brunner. It was so thoroughly worn when I got it that it was a $150 gun. I am very pleased with the results, and it was pronounced "really nice" by a group of old gun kibbitzers from LCSCA.

If you will, what did it cost for the restoration?

Turnbull is the best, but is very expensive.

Don, Freddy charged me $1275 to redo the solid rib 1912. Included drawfiling, polishing and rebluing, squaring up the muzzle, minor new wood inletted at the tang, recutting all checkering from scratch (the gun was so far gone that there was no checkering pattern to follow), supplying and fitting a NOS Winchester pad from his inventory (in hindsight I should have used a Silvers on that gun, but I can change the pad later), polishing the bore and bolt, and painting a new red line on the safety button. I bought it because it was cheap, had no idea it was a Tournament Grade until I examined it more closely. Truly a beater when I got it.

I would say either Turnbull or the Winrest. As I understand it, the guy at Winrest worked at the old Winchester plant so he has all the original oil/finish recipes. He should be pretty good. Good luck.
