what do you call the small wedge shaped dohickey that is soldered in under the top rib above the muzzles? I looked in a double gun glossery but didn't find it. Used to know this dammit.

"small wedge shaped dohickey" or I call it a "filler"
When I sleeved down a 20g to 28g, I made an hourglass shaped piece for this job. It and the wedge shaped pieces are generally very short. Some guns have the little wedge as part of the top rib

Craig, I did a LC Smith 20g field extractor gun. The job just takes time and some decent machining techniques, then learning traditional regulating and rib soldering techniques. I TIG welded the barrels and used a high temp solder (Hi-Force) for soldering in the barrel spacers and muzzle hourglass. I silver brazed the forend lug on so it will be durable. The forend lug had to be made from scratch. The barrels await my making of a top rib since I went from 28" 20g barrels to 30" 28g tubes and there is a point near the back where the barrels are tapered down where there is a larger than normal space between the barrels.

What kind of punishment do you expect in making a top rib? Will you start with a rib that you will buy or will you start from scratch?

Bill, I haven't quite decided on whether to make a multi-piece rib or one piece hollow channel like the original "Single Sigthing Plane" rib it had. One solution is to make a 'filler' plate that just fills the extremely wide area (about 3-4" long) then put a more normal rib on top. Another is to make a base/post/top rib assembly ventrib.
Kirk Merrington suggested starting with a Fox style rib with the flared base, but I don't like that rib style and the muzzle end needs to be very narrow for the 28g barrels with the back end being the area needing to be extraordinarily wide. Probably gonna be scratch built.
