I have a I Hollis & Sons hammer gun a fella gave me years ago. It is almost totally engraved. It has 34" barrels, marked Fine laminated steel club gun choke bore. There is the number 8534 engraved on the trigger guard wrist area. Barrels are browned. This thing has wear, but no damage. Locks, and triggers are tight. Even with 34" barrels, it has wonderful balance. Anybody have an ideas as to the history and value of such an animal? Briley wanted $3500.00 to restore it.

It sounds as if you ought to leave it alone in that condition? Why mess it up with a "restoration"?

HT most Hollis's that I have seen, and I've seen some very nice ones weren't worth much more than $3500 in restored condition. Hammerguns are usually worth even less. They are usually nicely made guns.

Restoration is usually applied to guns that can no longer be safely shot or that have some special value. This sounds like a shooter. How worn is it? 12 gauge?

34" barrels sounds like a fowler, trap, or pigeon gun. "Gun club" sounds like a trap gun. Can you weight it? How many inches forward of the front trigger does it balance teeter-totter fashion?

Well, the scenes on the side plates show a dog flushing a large bird. It balances about 8" from the center of the dt's. It weighs approx. 8lbs. It would be great as a duck gun or for driven pheasant. There is some pitting of the bores, but they look decently polished. The hammers are the rebounding type. They don't have a half cock position, but I can pull both hammers to full cock with my thumb with no problem. I don't know if I would ever shoot it. I'd have to have someone who knows what their looking at to tell me it was safe, and what to load for it.

I have an old I Hollis muzzle loader that's been in the family a long time. Unfortunately some relative restocked the thing with Chestnut. But the barrels are nice damascus and and the inscription on the rib reads "Old Nail Stub" which I love.
