one of the places I shoot has plenty of ammo. They still only sell what you are going to shoot there. A Walmart near me has the packs of 100 in red boxes back as well as some Winchester target loads. I was also able to buy 1000 cheddite primers today

High priced, I bet. Walmart Win Super Target shells are about $8.50 per box which is expensive for promo loads imho. Indiana gun club has Fed Top Gun for $99.99 a case….again, high dollar promo loads. Walmart premium shells (AA) are about $12/box. I wonder if shells will ever be affordable again??

Likely not, at least in the near future. Going to buy some premium hunting loads online soon. Just got an E mail from the manufacturer that they are available. Lay in a few boxes to insure this fall's activities.

I have been finding a good supply on 12 ga. Yes the prices have gone up. Paying about $8.00 more per hundred shells so I guess 2/ box more

What hasn’t gone up?

Red meat up
Gas up
Restaurant prices up

Stock market doing well so evens out

Local Walmart had Winchester .22 and CCI .22 mag last week for reasonable prices. Not cheap, but about half what gun shows are asking. Local gun shops have zero powder for shotguns and zero primers for anything. I did pick up a couple cases of wads, which were being dropped by one gun shop and paid less than six dollars a thousand for 12 and 20 AA clones.

Almost embarrassed to say I shot quail for 5 weeks with a case of Remington Game loads I paid $2.99/box for at a pawn shop.

$12.00+ for a line of skeet is going to limit youth participation. And stop the fixed income guys entirely.

People should really review how much they actually shoot, and damp down the competitive hoarding.

Back in the day, we would have reloading get together’s to help spread costs out for the more cost sensitive members.
We’d have 6 900G’s just rolling.
We had a good system.

Probably wasn’t legal.

I’m shooting $9/$12 a box promos for practice and saving my $6/$7 a box premiums ( bought early last year) for tourneys.

Did luck into a large catche of shotgun powder yesterday bought at pre Biden prices. Primers and lead continue to problematic.

I have plenty of powder and shot, but primers have been a real problem. I'm down to my last 1500 Winchester 209s, which I have historically used for my low pressure 12 gauge loads and all of my 20 and 28 gauge loads. I still have about 3000 Federals, but I'll have to redo all of my loading formulas to use them. Given the amount of shooting I do, that should get me well into 2023. What happens after that, I cannot say. I will certainly stock up on all components once they become available again and carry a much larger inventory than I did historically. Since I expect everyone else to do the same, I'm guessing we'll see a shortage for an extended period of time.

I just got back from the local gun store they had Remington/ Federal /Win and Focc target loads in 12&20 gauge. Case was running $84.99. No matter which brand you wanted. And no limit.

I scored 4lbs of 2f Goex black powder. I think I am set for a little while.

Now what's up with not being able to find Winchester XR Long beard in1 3/4oz of 6s. I see a lot of 5s and yes the price has went from $17.89 to $29.99 a box!

This might be a little like saying prices at the pump are up, because people are hording gas. Heck, distilled water is hard for stores to keep in stock, supposedly because plastics for the jugs are in short supply. There's a quite bigger picture and it aint pretty.

To some extent it is panic buying, I agree. The I am going to buy it because I finally found it state of mind. When you hear old guys at the club talking about having 20 flats of shells on hand and they shoot two rounds a week type mental mindset. Does it really matter if they shoot one type of shell or another for their once a week round of trap? But part of it is a real shortage of ammo to buy. It is not even a state where you know if you wait it will be right back in stock. Today, if you ask, the honest response is nobody knows when, if, or in what quantities it will be in stock. That creates extra buying demand because of the uncertainty and anxiety.

The second reason is the 5.4 million first time gun buyers last year. That is a big increase of people looking for ammo right when supplies were dropping. All they know is ammo is in short supply so buy what you see, when you see it. You don't know it has always returned in better supply later. You see bare shelves, in every store around you for 20 mile or even 200 miles and know it is like Russia store in the bad old days. So buy, buy, buy.

I reload almost all my ammo needs. What has impacted me the most is powder shortages. I keep an ungodly amount on hand because to load six gauges, in four different lengthen and everything from 1/2 ounce up to 3 1/2" 10 bore, lead, Bismuth and steel shot, it takes so many different powders. I think the last time I went over the different types it ended up more than 20. Some for low pressure, some for the .410, some for small bores, some for higher velocity hunting loads, some for one type of empty and some for another. Seven different primers for shot shells alone. Wads must be near 40 different types on hand, stocked from one bag to one case depending on the type. With this entire storeroom of components I have been able to load what I need to keep myself and two boy shooting. I never could have found factory ammo to meet my needs even if I traveled to three states looking for shells. The internet does not even have what I want and need. So am I a hoarder? To many I am sure I am but I have not increased my inventory at all from what it was four years ago when the store shelves were full. I do restock incrementally more than I did in the past because when I see it I might buy it if my levels are dropping for it. Heck I have lent or given stuff to about a dozen others, so they could reload this year because I know how frustrating it can be to find things these days.

A question and an observation...

- a few years ago (3?) there were several shooting magazine accounts of a new ammo facility preparing to open in Texas by Rio to produce millions of shotshells annually. Any idea if this happened or still will?
- I had a genuinely kind old shooting buddy who after an appropriate time would contact widows after the death of their shooter husbands to see if they needed to dispose of surplus firearms. He'd offer fair prices for good guns that the family didn't want. These days it might be even more valuable to similarly scavenge ammo and components, and sometimes before anyone departs but just retires from the sports. A few years ago an aging friend of mine sold me all the lead shot I wanted for $10/bag.

Was at a large gun show in a Denver suburb yesterday. No shortage of shot shells as long as you were looking for 12 or 20. No sales either except for .223. Only saw one vendor with powder and all he had looked double priced. Saw no primers.

As for guns? 95% black rifles and plastic pistols.

That has indeed been my experience at Denver area gun shows with the exception being the collectors show which is now in the Springs. I cannot remember the last show I attended other than a collector show.
