I picked up an unusual full box of Remington shotgun shells at a garage sale yesterday wich is labeled as follows: Premier Magnum Extended Range Buffered Magnums Gauge 12,Length 2 3/4, oz. shot 1 1/2, shot 2 The shot as pictured on the box appears to be copper plated. The retail price of $17.49 is still on the box. I am assuming these were duck and goose loads before the lead shot ban.

Must not be a lot of duck or goose hunters here!! I suppose these could be used for turkey. Not the best load for dove or quail at least IMO!! Jim

Jim:
There are a couple of us here, I'm sure. I have a flat or so of Winchester XX Super Double X Magnum gauge 12, 2 3/4", #2 shot, 1 1/2 oz. Copper Plated Shot at $14.95. I really don't know what you could hunt with them except for varmits(crow included). Better check your State regs on shot size for turkey before igniting a few rounds on yon Thanksgiving turkey.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Those are pre lead ban type goose loads. Probably okay for coyote. Would work on turkey for body shots but not great for patterning of head/neck shots. Can't think what else they would be legally useful shooting.

There were also some WW XX Super Double X Magnum 3" 12ga. rounds loaded w/ 1 & 7/8oz. of lead shot !!
All the above rounds were pre lead shot ban duck & goose loads. I always considered them an expensive form of self abuse, but each to his own.
I'd also think twice before shooting any of those bruisers in a good double, the head of the buttstock might not endure the experience unscathed. Quite proabable it would be painful for the shooter as well.

I have a box of my stupider days when I thought bigger was better: Winchester Super X Magnum Mark 5, 3-inch, 1 7/8 No. 4 for geese using my old Breda auto. The price of the box of 25 shells was $5.37. How pleased I am that I went back to the old doubles, with the help and generosity of this board

They are indeed goose loads or duck. In the lead days, I kept lead 2&3/4" #4's in one pocket and 2&3/4" #2's in another. Since ducks fly at dawn and geese later, the #4's were quickly changed to #2's if we heard honking and vice versa if quacks. With the advent of steel shot, you just needed one size of large shot because nothing worked anyway. The primary danger in turky hunting stems from being shot by another hunter. Wisconsin limits shot size to #4 lead and I have to assume other states do as well to minimize the effect from being shot. Your shells are relics of a bygone era. Lead 3" 2oz loads are still available and used for turkey. The velocity is less than waterfowl loads to get more shot in the shell. 3&1/2" lead with even more shot are still available although I would not want to touch one off. -Dick

Thanks for the info. guys. You have confirmed what I thought was the case with these shells. Good point about not using these in any older double. This is the fodder for 870s and 1100s as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably just put the box away as a relic from the past. Jim
