geo, i grew up physically, mostly in florida, in the fifties...
my first shotgun was ah stevens 94c, single shot 410...that was my first shotgunning experience...one of the things i learned with it was that the only way i could kill a quail, was to shoot one on the ground at dusk, when they were all in a tight circle, roosting under an orange tree...i also learned that it was socially unacceptable to shoot birds when they are not airborne...only ignorant children and uncouth yankees did such things...
next, i was further blessed on my eleventh birthday...my dad gave me a 16 gauge stevens 311a double barreled shotgun! that gun, along with an introduction to bird hunting with dogs and mentors, allowed me to learn the joys of real upland bird shooting...my mentors were uncles and cuzins...they all carried 16's...been a 16 gauge man ever since...
oh, and back then, no one sat on his ass and shot at song birds as they flew by...
