As a private seller shipping out of state, is there any federal requirement to get a copy of the FFL license of the place the gun is sent?

Not sure but I would get one anyway for down the road if somehow this firearm was involved in a crime.

I have had two shotguns shipped direct to my FFL holder recently. Both asked for copies of the receiving FFL's license. And, the receiving FFL holder will definitely need a copy of your driver's license for record. Been through this twice in the last year.

Depending on how you're shipping the gun, the service you're using may ask to see a copy of the FFL to which you're shipping the gun. I've had a couple different UPS places ask me for that.

It puts the receiving FFL in a bind when a copy of shipper's driver's license isn't furnished. ATF gave my FFL supplier a warning during a check of transactions when no driver's license was furnished in shipment. As a result, at least for a time, he required the shipment to come from another FFL. Gil

The ATF has a website that allows unlicensed persons to verify the validity of FFLs. The ATF has sent letters and advisories to FFLs telling them they are not required to provide license copies to unlicensed persons. They're free to do so, but the ATF's preference is that unlicensed persons use the FFL EZ-Check website instead. (Licensees are still expected to exchange license copies -- the above comment only relates to non-licensees shipping to a license holder.) FFL EZ-CHECK LINK The purpose of this program is to allow an FFL or other user to verify that a Federal Firearms License (FFL) is valid. The user needs only enter the first 3 digits and the last 5 digits of the FFL being verified in the blocks provided and select the SUBMIT button . . .
FFL eZ Check does not validate Type 03 (Collectors of Curios and Relics) and Type 06 (Manufacturer of Ammunition) licenses . . .

If shipping to someone I am selling to I ask for and get a copy, these days it's usually emailed. I then check the ATF database to make sure it's still current. I would not ship without a copy of the FFL it's going to.
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

FFLs have no obligation to provide a copy of their license to unlicensed persons. In fact, the ATF suggests that they do not. ATF Advisory Letter March 2014 . . . licensees are reminded that only transactions between licensees require the furnishing of a certified copy of the license. Licensees should consider only providing the basic license number to individuals (e.g., 1-75-12345). The individuals can use FFL eZ Check to confirm the validity of the license number before sending payment for firearms advertisedonline. FFL eZ Check is on the ATF website at http://www.atf.gov/content/firearms/firearms-industry/applications-FFL-eZ-check.
