The natural lakes down here sometimes go dry when the water table recedes and a sinkhole forms. When that happens things that've been sunk on the bottom for years dry out. When the lakes return, things float up.

I've found most of my antique wooden decoys when the water comes back and the old decoys float up. Most have been Victor or Animal Trap products and in pretty poor shape. The ones in my decoy rig have been re-headed and painted over. No value, I'm sure but dear to me...Geo

My rig was 44 woodens and corks, factory and home-made, Mostly scaup, but a few canvasbacks, redheads, and two cork bufflehead drakes. Been giving them away to the North Dakota Chapter of The Wildlife Society for their annual fundraiser auction. Have 30 more collector woodens on glass shelves. Yipes! Just realized I've been hunting over these things out of a boat for 70 years.
Just got my swan tag in the mail.

Corkies are great-- The late George Soule, decoy maker for Mr. Leon Leonwood Bean, was one of the best "back in the day"-- Now-we have great moulded dekes with weighted keels- if you hunt big water, you need a lot of decoys in your rig-- but how you place them is just as important as how many you have.

For mallards, I like to have more Hens in my spreads than Drakes- why? Because the hens do all the chattering, so if I am working birds with a call (I like the older Olt calls) I want more "ladies chattin' at the Church social"-- so to speak. But if the incoming mallards are "workin'-- I lay off the calling. RWTF
