What is the correct process for safely replacing a worn plastic dogs head escutcheon in a forend with a new one? Particularly the removal of the worn unit.

Since replacement units are made and sold, youd think people bought them, needing to replace them, or why bother making them?

I had a lefever with a completely worn down dog's head in the forend. I bought a modern reproduction from Galazan, steamed out the old one and glued in the new one. I'm not sure steam on the forend was a good idea. Point is the escutcheon was just glued in...Geo

Thanks Geo. That's what I was hoping for. I wonder, if steam dislodged it, could it be a hide glue type of adhesive.
