Hopefully, the M-71 qualifies for a 'Classic Single Barreled Sporting Rifle'...

I recently picked up a 71 Deluxe which has had the buttstock chopped maybe 1-1/2" and some awful black and white spacers added along with a 1" recoil pad. I assume my options would be a) find a take-off and hope the wood and finish match; b) have one made from scratch; c) send the stock off to someone like DES for an extension.

What would one expect to pay for each of these options?

Are there other options?

Thank you for your time,
Hoot

An inexpensive alternative requiring the least inletting and shaping to get a near factory stock is Precision Gunstocks. They Google easily.

Finding a takeoff will be the proverbial "needle in a haystack" thing. If you did get lucky to locate one, I'd be shocked of a good one was under about $500. And hopefully it's close, and for a Deluxe!!! Then youhave the "long tang/short tang" issues. SO need to know which one you have?
Having someone build, fit, and finish new wood will likely run you twice that amount, but at least it can be done. But even then the match to forearm might not be perfect, so it might require a forearm too. Add for that and the new stock set might end up 50% higher and be in the $1500 range completed.

All that said; here's a short tang standard 71 stock at Fleabay that maybe could work and then have someone checker it to make it a Deluxe? Need a buttplate too, but those are easy to get.

And a semi inletted stock set:

Precision Gun Works sells a pre-turned for the Winchester 71
Both long and short tang models.
Forend too if you need one.
They take some skill to final inlet and finish of course. They don't just slide into place.

Midwest GunParts has buttstocks for the Browning repro of the Winchester 71 ($200 finished)
I'm not sure if they are a direct replacement or not. Might be worth some digging.
Probably 'short tang' but that's a guess on my part.

Macon Gunstocks also sells a preturned for the 71.
I've never done biz with them but have not heard the best of feed back about their products. So you are on your own with them.

Numrich sells a pre-turned for the Win71
Both the long and short tang versions. Most likely from one of the above outfits though there are plenty of other turners out there,

Thanks Gents!

It is a short tang for certain. I am not surprised at the figures you cite...about what I expected.

What about a butt extension? I've seen pictures of DES's work and have been amazed so I expect the craftsman gets his due.

Thanks again for the input.

I've seen a number of repaired buttstocks where the butt had been clipped and a buttpad installed. In every one I could see where the wood was added back in the repair. Some easily seen, while others were very hard to see. But the point is I could see all of them.
For me this type of repair would always bug me, but if the cost was not too high I'd still do so if the repair wasn't easily detected. But I'm guessing those who could do so will likely charge a real premium for that level of craftsmanship.

Yeah, I expect I'd be able to see the 'patch'. Although, it would bug me it sure wouldn't bug me as much as the abomination that's on there now! laugh

A possibility is to buy a less than collectable condition gun with a stock that can be refinished. Switch stocks with your gun, refinish the new stock, and resell the other gun. The swivels will be a hard thing to find if you don't already have them.

I had considered that...just side-step the entire problem.

This rifle came with a couple of sets of swivels, so I'm set there.

Those swivels go for big bucks too! The wide width makes them very desirable, so good you got them with the gun! An interesting note on those sling swivels. Marlin used the same sling swivels on their Model 36 Deluxe. So they are always called Model 71 swivels, but weren't exclusive to the Model 71.

Thank you Sir! I had seen that one but it is an early "long tang" and mine is later.
