What's the best way to remove maker's labels from old British gun cases? Steam? Found an unlabled case that fits my WR double rifle perfectly. I have an old case that I do not believe is WR but it has nice original WR labels that I'd like to transfer. Thanks

Hi Mike: I steamed a Boss Label off the case that, as I recall, housed a back-action sidelock Lancaster that you helped me bring over the pond--quite a few years back. I did that because I wanted to reline the case, which was kind of wigged out. The interior of the case came out great, if I do say so myself, but the ink on the label did run a tad but it looks OK. I think I steamed it over a boiling tea kettle; maybe there is a better way...Gil

I think that steam will loosen the old type glue. I didn't wish to harm the labels. Might try it later if I don't hear of a better way.

You might try heating with a hair dryer. I doubt that would harm the label, even if it did not loosen or soften the glue.

Labels in vintage British gun cases where invariably glued in place with Rabbit skin glue or sometimes pearl glue made from cattle. The Rabbit skin glue does not leave stains on paper or any thing else for that matter, still used today in Book binding. Use steam to soften it but do not use steam from a kettle or pan directly this carries a lot of water causing some label inks to run. I use a wall paper steamer the type for removing wallpaper you could also use a gallon metal can filled with water on a heat source with a length of hose. I use a plastic box just big enough to cover the label to be removed and feed in the steam direct from the steamer hose, steam fed directly this way is far hotter and carries far less condensate and usually takes a short time to soften the glue enabling you to remove the label in one piece.
The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!

I used the tea kettle to remove stamps for my collection when I was a kid. It would make the cancellation ink run if you overdid it...Geo
