Does anyone know where I could purchase gun case felt or baise, is it Simonis cloth?, I purchased a case from Holts, never do it again, and motivated by Damascus's postings, thought I would attempt a refiting/ relining.
happy holidays, John

Hi susjwp. Just thought I better make things clear. Felt is a non woven fabric and is not suitable for gun cases in the long term and even in the short term, it will pill and go very shabby very quickly so do not be tempted to use even if it can be purchased for roughly three quarters the price of Baize. Baize is a woven fabric needing a high level of wool to provide that nap that gives that hard wearing and cushioning up market look to the case. I purchase my Baize from UK Fabrics on line though I do not know if they ship to other countries. Forget FELT it is BAIZE you need to use. And good luck with your project.
The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!

John, I use 80/20 Billiard Wool (pool table fabric) or Medium Weight Ultrasuede. These are the same fabrics used by folks like Marvin Huey and they work perfectly, look great, and last forever. The thing I like about Billiard Wool is you can cut a small amount into the fabric and then tear it and it tears perfectly straight. Saves some time cutting straight lines and gives a perfect edge.
Either fabric choice will run you about $45/yard. I usually buy 2 yards at a time to have plenty left over.
Good luck with your project.

I'll second Billiard cloth. I use Elmer's to glue it to the underlying case structure. One trick is to use map tacks and glue one side, let the glue dry, then apply another light glue layer on the rest of the area, stretch the fabric and hold it in place with map tacks. The tack holes disappear.

Thanks all. I experimented with several adhesvies and found 3M 77 the easiest to use. Holds well and gave me time to adjust before it swt up. I learned the hard way to over measure and then cut to size when the adhesive dried thoroughly. This case from Holts was beat up and out of square, but it looks passable with new stitching and baise. I lined the interior with 1/4 oak, lightly stained, to help reinforce the original wood, spruce or popular, cut a channel for the biase, and glued, nailed with braids, to the sides. looks nice, although it reduced the interior dimension, but this will be refit for a 20 hammer gun, so there is sufficinet room. I realize now why new cases are so expensive, this is labor intensive work. must have patience and can not be in a rush. i good learning experience for an inpatient New Yorker.
Thanks for all the advise.
ps I found billard cloth at Blats billiards in NYC, 40.00 per yard, Simonis, 70.00 per.

can't get anything to show after the first page. When I click on a item the screen blinks and goes right back to the page I started with.

I bought some baize, pearl glue and interior boards from them. Shipping was only 10 pounds. That should be enough to redo my case.

I bought some baize, pearl glue and interior boards from them. Shipping was only 10 pounds. That should be enough to redo my case. I know this is an old thread.... But I'm wondering how your cloth and project worked out. I'm considering three options for sourcing baize for a project and would like to get opinions. Here are info and prices, including shipping (links to pages): 1. Peter Dyson- 1 yard of 30" wide 'premium baize' fabric, $70 2. Blatt Billiards- 1 yard of 66" wide Simonis 860 (27oz 90% worsted, 10% nylon), $72 3. William Booth 1 yard of 60" wide Broad cloth (28oz 100% worsted, 'light nap'), $46.50 Right now I'm leaning in the direction of the Simonis 860. Peter Dysons cloth is tempting, but they don't say exactly what your getting, it will take longer to ship from Britland to the Bayou, and the cost is twice that of the Simonis. I would like to keep the restoration authentic, so if you all say that Dyson 'baize' is the genuine stuff and Simonis is not, I might go that route. Don't really know what to think of the thick broad cloth from Willam Booth. Sounds a lot like baize, but I suspect there is a difference. Good thing is you can order as little as a quarter yard ($8.50), so a sample of fabric is possible.

Jim,
There is a dealer, billiard cloth, in Charlotte, NC, that sells the same cloth as Blatts in NYC. George P. buys baize from them and I ordered 36+60” of the bright red for a Grant case. Easy to cut and work with, I,ll dig out particulars later today with phone number. The Charlotte store offers several types, all about 40. per yard. There is an outlet in PA that sells all sorts of baize and wool sourced from England and Scotland for tartans. I ordered black watch pattern in wool for Scottish gun oak and leather relining. Fabri Tac glue works well for small areas, no overspray as with S77, as does Locktite super glue.
I attempted to purchase from Hanisworth but could not communicate, so...
Good luck, John

Thanks John. Any info you have on those two sources would be great.
I came across another cloth after posting, and I think it might be nice. Its a snooker table cloth called Strachan 6811. It has a nap to it, and can be bought at 30 or 32oz. Only issue is that I can't find it by the yard, and a table sized piece is about $500! I wonder if your NC contact might have it by the yard.

The "Doeskin" line by Hainsworth is the most perfect match I have seen to the original weight of wool using in antique cases. Have used it several times, and have never been disappointed.
Many people use wool that is too heavy, and the finished case partitions look bulky. If you are doing a French fitting, it doesn't really matter.

That's interesting. Looks like the doeskin is only an 11-12oz fabric. I would have thought that was too thin. But what you're saying about the dividers getting bulky makes sense.

Jim,
The NC store is American Billiards in Charlotte. Contact person is Keith Plyer, 704-333-0041. Web is americanbilliards.net. They have Proline Cloth and Symonis and sample charts. Easy to deal with over the phone. Proline makes several grades. The fine cloth is 45 per 36 by 60” Worked fine for that Grant case Reline. BLatts in NY sells same grade different or at least relabeled with their name. I misplaced the web site forthePA store but Google Tartans And they should come up. Black watch cloth was 23 oz and 70. Per. Hope this helps.
