I have a Sauer Mauser that's marked on the left receiver side with the Oberndorf legend. It also has Oberndorf style DSTs. The barrel has typical Sauer markings. It has a cheekpiece and quite a lot of engraving including a red deer on the floorplate. The caliber is 30-06. I'm curious to know if the Mauser markings are unusual on a JP Sauer. I've seen several Sauers over the years. but none were marked Mauser.

I have a J.P. Sauer Mauser rifle with the Sauer serial number on the side of the receiver ring and the Mauser serial number behind the recoil lug. What makes it very unusual is the fact that the Mauser number is 2003, which makes it a transition model action and one of the first released to the civilian market, since the first 2000 went to the German military.

It has a half round, half octagon barrel with integral full length rib, caliber 8X57J, and a typical pre World War I stock with side panels and a cross wedge with escutcheons in the forearm. The wood has been refinished and the bolt handle and safety altered for low scope mounting. I took two deer with it last season.

Until the end of WW1 Sauer had to buy actions or barreled actions from Mauser Oberndorf, to build their rifles on. This was because of the patents still being in force. After the war, Sauer( and others) were able to build rifles on re-worked Military actions. I have the residue of Mauser transition action and barrel, serial number 100, with a Rigby legend on the barrel( as well as Rigby letter). This means commercial numbers didn't start with 2000. It seems like transition actions were sold commercially within the "test" block of numbers. BTW the Rigby is dated 1898 on the receiver ring and is 7x57.

Hav ing owned several JP Sauer Mausers, none of them built on military actions, I'm still wondering if one with both Sauer and Mauser markings is non-typical. I'm asking because I've never seen one before.
