Hello Gentlemen:
I have a Darne R-17 model that is in very good condition except inside the barrels that are heavy pitted (maybe "eroded" es the adecuate word to describe the corrosion inside!). I do not have a gauge to meassure the thickness on those profound pits, but I do not want to risk a blow because the worst damage is in the forcing cones and between 15 to 20 cm in front of breach. It is a 12 ga and I decided to make a pair of long (25 cm) inserts and convert it to a 20 ga. The shotgun is very, very light, so an extra Lb because the inserts will convert to a 6 and a half 20 gauge shotgun. The question is, could you recomend the adecuate steel to make those inserts? I have a lathe, tools and the ability to make the inserts, but comarcially there are a lot of steels with Cr and Mo, so what is the adecuate? I really appreciate your advise.
Best,
Jose

Might make more sense to order a set of 20ga Companion tubes or Side-Kick chamber inserts from Briley.

Thank you for your answers. SAE 4140, that will be!
If I lived in USA of course it is a way better option to buy something standard, but I live in Mexico city, so my best option y to make the inserts myself. Once they fit correctly I will glue them with a strong epoxy resine to make a permanent fix.

Perhaps a donor single barrel 20 ga. barrel could be a start for the insert? Already chambered and seems to me not to need any more complicated machining than bar stock.

Yes, of course I will show you some photos of the Darne! From the serial number (letter L plus 3 numbers), I think is around 100 years old.
The idea to use a 20 ga barrel is good... if I could find two 20 ga single barrels in the area, not an easy option I think.

Have you given thought to the regulation of the 20 ga. inserts? They may not shoot to the same point of impact as the original barrels. How will you adjust for that?

These sure would make it easier https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BRILEY-COMPANION-DROP-IN-SUB-GAUGE-TUBE-SET-20-GAUGE/263923609779?hash=item3d7312b0b3:g:U8cAAOSwKUVbUH-p:rk:5:pf:0

Skeettx, of course those Briley tubes are an excelent solution, but I can not import them. Besides, they cost twice what I paid for the Darne (probably the best deal I make buying a firearm!)
Stan, I think that the POI will not change significantly. The inserts will be about 10" long, I will make an "inverted forcing cone" at the end to smooth the transition of the charge between the insert and the original barrels. As I understand, the plastic wad will seal gases once it is on the 12 ga barrel and the original chokes will control the shot spread.

My mistake, Jose. I was under the impression that these would be full length inserts. In the case that they are only 10", I agree. The regulation should not change.
Good luck friend, SRH
