Does anyone know if an Auto 5 (Sweet 16) will function reliably with 2 1/2" shells?
How about with 7/8 oz loads?
3/4 oz ?

You should be able to use light loads by changing the "ring" around, but I don't know about 2 1/2" shells, I never tried them in my Sweet Sixteen, they might not feed correctly, I just don't know.

It's a matter of total recoil impulse.

The 2 1/2" shell is no problem as long as the load is stout enough to drive the action full stroke.

These are not real light weight guns, they handle fine with standard 1 oz. loads.

Removing the bronze friction piece to get the gun to cycle light loads is a bad idea. It also damps the speed at which the action returns to battery, and without it in place the wood takes a beating. This is one reason forends crack.

A vent rib cylinder choke is a bit of a find. Nice.

Only about 40% of the barrels had a VR, and most were choked F.

That would be a great skeet gun.

Light load setting, Bob.

Those are good shells.

There are 100% reliable in my S-16.

There seems to be a lot going on when an A5 operates. Pogo stick meets washing machine...Ka-Chunk!
What outcomes might there be using the two different settings and this one particular shell.
Would the gun function with either?

Quail killing machines. I used to hunt with a Sweet 16 and a Light 20 when I was young. Very well made guns imho. I think quail are too scarce now for 5-shot automatics, so I shoot doubles (just my opinion though). Now that Im older and killing isnt my main objective, I like my 2 shots and then enjoy seeing the rest fly away. smile. BTW, an old Browning repairman told me a long time ago, 30 weight motor oil is the ticket for the friction sleeve.

The only real way to tell is to try them. I believe Shotgunjones to be correct though. The guns if clean and the rings set correctly work very well. When I had a general gunsmithing shop in town I saw boat loads of them this time of year, almost always just needing a good clean and oil. Very popular in this part of the country in the past.

The gun will fire with either setting. It likely will not eject and reload with the 'heavy load' configuration.

A 'heavy load' is 1 1/8" high velocity (think duck/phez load).

The magazine tube should NOT be oiled, especially with 30 weight oil. I have no idea where advice like that comes from.

Browning severely chastised Winchester for doing just that to a prototype and then complaining that it didn't work.

That is a friction system.

All that is required on the tube is a very tiny bit of something like Rem Oil for rust prevention.
