First of all Godspeed to all in the path of Florence.

I have a 1897 barrel with the 1st type rotary joint check. What does the screw in the bottom rib between the barrel lug and forearm lug do? Second how do you remove the rotary joint check?

Thanks

Travis not to let this go unanswered on here, the screw between the lug and the barrel loop on the short solid rib was to let excess water out when the barrel was rusted.

On the L.C. Smith site I answered your question showing a few pictures on the removal of the joint check.
