Maybe this has been discussed but I suggest that you not use FEDEX. I had a gun shipped to me that was damaged in shipment, the seller filed claim and FEDEX reufsed to pay more than 500.00 saying that commodities such as guns were limited to 500.00 for any damage regardless of what the gun was insured for. The gun was insured for its full value and the damage was a significant amount to make whole again.
I wont go into my dealings with the seller at this time, thats another story that hasnt been settled yet. But, DO NOT USE FEDEX.
I have been using US Postal Service for years for everything. No hassles, no worries. They are light years ahead of FEDEX. From what I know, UPS is about the same as FEDEX.

Funny but you can find posts on all the forums that say
"don't use Fed Ex" "Don't use UPS" "Don't use USPS"
It's like damning an airline - they all suck, but what choice have you got?
Brent
PS. I usually use USPS, but I've never had a problem with any of the others.

I don't see how they can legally take your money for a certain amount of insurance and then refuse to pay it if they damage the package. If they will not pay any more than a certain amount of money on insurance, then they should not be able to charge for any more than that amount to the shipper. I'm not a lawyer, but that sounds like breach of contract to me.

Yeah, and go try suing them? I dont have a lawyer on retainer and would spend thousands suing a corporation in another state.

Brian, sorry for your problem ! You are 100% dead on about using USPS.
Brent, I have been in this biz for 49 years. Used both FedEx and UPS with varying degrees of lost packages & damage. For the last eight years I have used USPS "Registered mail" only for shipping. So far , I haven't had one damaged or lost package. I no longer will accept any package shipped by FedEx or UPS and advise my clients of such. I must ship some where about 150 packages a year for color case, bluing , repair, stockwork and return to client. I'd say USPS has been 100% for me. Best regards, ken

Ken, where do you get the tape for shipping registered mail. I can't find any of the accepted tape in this area.

I've primarily used Fed Ex with good results. Pack it for keeps. An inexpensive hardcase is cheap insurance. The problems I've experienced with USPS are mediocre to poor delivery time and a tracking system that does not exist. I never know where a package is and in over half the cases the package gets there when it gets there. Pick your poison.

Couple weeks back I shipped a rifle USPS. It was in a wood crate made of 1/4" plywood with 1x3 edges screwed together, cardboard boxed inside. I put three wraps of clear plastic container tape around it and they accepted it without a hitch for registered mail, fully insured. It was delivered halfway across the country between noon Saturday, when I mailed it, and 2:00PM on Monday. Pretty good service which I have used before.
