Greetings all,

Ive had this Franz Kettner drilling for several years now. Ive never fired the rifle, but routinely use the 16ga on clays. It is a real joy to shoot. I have a neophyte question about the scope mount. I'm sure it has a proper name, but Ill call it a sliding mount for lack of a better term. How does this mount stack up to a claw mount in terms of strength, repeatability, and desirability? It would seem to me to be repeatable enough, but it is hard on the bluing. Pics to follow (I hope)...

Thanks in advance,

Thank you, skeettx.

I'll try this another way. It's becoming embarrassing...

Any marks on the sides of the lugs or on the water-table. Kelber effort on the tubes and it looks like the mark of the script L just might be an intertwinded L&K?

Thank you so much, Raimey. I added a couple more pics. SN, crown U, and one other mark on water table. No marks on sides of lugs. Two initials near forward lug.

Thanks again.

I've seen similar for Kettner:

http://www.germanhuntingguns.com/archives/kettner-eduard-franz/

It is some Kerner-Anson drilling platform with bushed & disk set strikers.

Wow, thank you. I've really only started researching some of this stuff over the last couple of weeks. The body of knowledge on this and a few other sites is truly incredible. I love my drilling, but it's nice to also learn some about its possible history.

Kind regards,
Duane

Enjoy reading the history on your gun smile

http://www.shotguns.se/html/germany_1890-1945.html

Under the 7.8 mm 57 is that 832?

If so, it was proofed in August of 1932

Too, many members here are also members of the other associated sites. But Mr. Larry B. Schuknecht has adeptly continued the grand efforts of Mr. Dietrich Apel for the Germanhuntingguns.com site.

Thank you very much, skeettx. I do have the proof marks book, but with all of the small shop work that took place in Europe back then, it has been difficult to piece together much of a story. I suppose it doesnt really matter. I like the gun. Its a blast to shoot, and Ive never been one to let one just sit in the safe. But, its still fun to try to piece the history together. That first number is 3, so its actually 332. What are your thoughts on that type of scope mount?

Thank you for all of your help,
Duane

I noticed that. I read pretty extensively on the German Gun Collectors site and was stunned by the knowledge there. I tried to join up but havent heard back, so I came here.

I didnt know the story behind Herr Apel. Im only about 40 miles from NECG and have been there several times.

Duane

sheppadu,
You have a very nice Drilling, cherish it and hunt with it. The German Gun Collectors Assn. Will be happy to have you as a member, I'm sure. I think the mounts are called aufshubmomtage(sp?). If I had a drilling without the scope, I would rather have that type base. It would be easier(and cheaper)to have rings made for.

aufshub-momtage

Ford looks to be correct:

http://www.eaw.de/de/service/anleitungen.html

Possibly a relative of Dietrich Apel's?

Friar Fred will get off his duff @ some point & let you in GGCA.

Raimey,
Sometime ago, I asked Dietrich if they were the same family. He said they were not, as far as he knew.
Mike
( The reason for the question is "EAW" is Ernst Apel Wuerzburg)
