I was recently chatting to the owner of my local sporting clays club and he told me that Kent had a new line of target ammunition and there is a new 2.5" load on offer. Incredulous, I checked the Kent website and indeed there is!
Kent Elite Low Recoil-Training - 12ga, 2 1/2", 3/4 oz., #8, 1200 fps.
Surprisingly, these are made in the US factory as well. I'm keen to get my hands on some but they will not arrive in Canada for a couple of months.
Has anyone seen or used these yet?

BG,
Thanks for the heads up! Suddenly being in the market for 2 1/2" target shells, I called my LGS to order them. I'll let you know the outcome, as he has a source for Kent shells. I currently use RST's for hunting and am looking for a less expensive plastic target shell. Kent's product code for the shells is #E122L20-8. 2 1/2"-3/4oz.-1200fps-#8's. That should get the job done.

That's pretty fast velocity for a low recoil shell--a good bit faster than the Win Low Recoil/Low Noise loads. But no one should feel much in a 6# + gun. Should make for a decent skeet load in short chambered 12's. 3/4 breaks targets well enough in 28's and 20's. No reason it won't in 12's--although I usually shoot 7/8 oz reloads in the big bores.

Larry,
I'm wondering if the velocity was boosted because of the light payload. I know that Fiocchi trainer loads in 7/8 oz. are fast. I've tried the Win. loads a long time ago and they seemed really slow, but quiet. I hope my LGS comes through for me, as I'd really like to try the Kents.

This thread piqued my interest. I'm always looking for a new quality shotshell with a light payload to try in the old doubles I have. Anyway, you guys may be aware Kent doesn't sell to individuals. I wasn't until I called them. The lady on the phone at Kent did give me the name, # of a distributor in VA.

I spoke to Nick and he was checking on pricing of a case to TX. I can report back tomorrow as to what he tells me in an email.

Well shoot men. I did a little digging on huntstuff.com website.

http://www.huntstuff.com/products/Kent%20Cartridge/elite%20low%20recoil%20and%20training.html

Apparently it's offered at $71.99/case.
Now just wondering how much from VA to TX. But I'll still probably get a case.

I thought the Win. low noise/recoil shells at 900fps. or so were weak. Given their purpose I'm sure they have a use, just not for me. The Fiocchi shells at 1200fps and 7/8oz. were perfect. The Kent shells should be even better. When my LGS calls me with the price per flat I'll post.

I have used the Winchester low recoil/noise shells and they are anemic. It's amazing how many clays you see being dusted on the dome without breaking when using them.
I have also used the Federal Top Gun in 7/8oz. and those are excellent light loads for game guns but 2 3/4". Federal states on the box that they load them with Alliant Extra-Light powder. I have checked the reloading data on the Alliant site and they should be 7760 psi if we infer that the components are Federal wads and primers...
I would assume the Kent loads would be fairly low pressure as it is hard to make a 3/4 oz. load at 1200 fps very high through a 12ga.

7760 psi is a totally realistic pressure whether the gun has Twist, Damascus or Steel barrels. The Alliant Extra-Light powder will put its max pressure where the chambers are at their thickest. If a gun won't stand this pressure, hang it on the wall or make a lamp out of it. I'm not Hung Up on all those 5K pressure loads. Of course I was always a hunter rather than a clays shooter & many of those super light pressure loads are un-reliable in cold weather.

They almost sound like the old Kent Gamebore White Gold XLR shells.
( from my notes on them, after contacting them some years ago for the pressures)

White Gold XLR, plastic case,
65mm (2 1/2")
21gm (3/4oz), #8 shot (312 pellets .085"-.090") (my count)
Fibre wad
1250 ft/sec
7,975psi

I like the Fiocchi trainers and have used them in my Brit twist hammer gun with good success. When I bought my last batch a few years ago, Fiocchi quoted the chamber pressure at 6600psi. Don't know about the current batches because I have not seen any on the shelf in a while.

All I use are my 3/4oz 12ga reloads at 1275fps. Get a clean burn and the higher velocity is suppose to eliminate a hot center core in the pattern with 3/4oz loads. There's no recoil and they break clay birds just fine. #8's are good for skeet, trap, and SC's. 8000psi is fine for any barrel. I think you're gonna like them. I'd buy some but I can reload 3/4oz shells for about 3.45/box. Good luck - Paul

Just heard about shipping. My total is $98.02. The same price per box as the Win. FeatherLight 980fps shells at my local wally world. Will be ordering some.

Shipping cost would probably drop if two or more cases were ordered, which is the case when ordering from RST.

I have 4 cases enroute to my LGS, I'll post the price when they come in. I had them shipped to the LGS because the Huntstuff web site said that UPS ground shipping would be cheaper to a business address over a residential one.

I'm excited about them because although I use RST's for hunting, it would be great to have some less expensive plastic hulled 2 1/2" shells to burn up at sporting clays. I'm sure the 3/4 oz. #8's would be fine for that. The Churhill can't wait!

The best place to order shells on the internet, that I have found, is Hinterland Outfitters, in Texas. They offer $9.99 flat rate shipping, for as many flats of shells as you care to order. I emailed them about these new shells and they replied that if I would send them the Kent product code they would see if they could get them. I replied with the code, and am awaiting their reply, now.

Their prices are good, too, Karl. I regularly order my 12 ga. Fiocchi Interceptor spreaders and 3/4 oz. WW .410 loads from them. Last order was 3 flats ..............that's $3.33 per flat shipping. Tough to beat.

Thanks, then Hinterland Outfitters it is then when Kent starts to produce them. It should only be a couple of weeks as they are short of one of the components.

Guys,
They my be suprised at the interest in 2 1/2" loads and consider loading in other gauges, especially the 16. It certainly has proven the case with RST's popularity.

They can make money selling those by offering them for substantially less than RST. I mean Classic Sporting Company could offer english shells (Gamebore or Hull) loaded for Holland and Holland for less than $10 per box if I recall correctly. No reason company here can't load some and sell 65mm shells for say $7.99 per box of 25.

Caledonian, a Scottish shell has 3/4 oz loads too in 12 ga, but their shells are 2 5/8 and not 2 1/2. They have 7/8 oz and 1 oz loads too in 2 5/8.

I don't think the boys are going to accept avg. Vo of 1350fps. What we are looking for is something slower moving and at cost of under $10 per 25 cartridges.
I'm looking forward to ordering some of them mythical Kent of WV 3/4oz 1200fps 65mm 12ga cartridges when someone actually lists them as being available.

The Caledonian 3/4 oz arent 1350 FPS Jagermeister. They are listed as 1215 FPS. In fact, the majority of their 2 5/8 shells are around 1200 FPS and some are less. Why dont you do some research before you make false statements here? Also, the Caledonian shells are about $6.20/box.

Went to their site>>>Game>>>Traditional Loads>>>Classic 12ga.....states muzzle velocity 1350fps. I suppose if someone was to test them at distance other than Vo the average velocity would be less.

Actually, what Jagermeister really means is that he may put a box of shells on Layaway when Kent comes out with a Tire Kicker and Gun Counter Drooler Load. Remember, this is a guy that doesn't even own any double shotguns who makes thousands of posts on a double gun forum pretending to be an expert on things he has no real experience with.

We can only wait and wonder what his next Tire-Kicking gun buying fantasy will be. A couple weeks ago, it was a pre-1968 20 ga. Darne. Before that, it was wasting our time with stuff like this:

Jagermeister's Gun Buying Fantasy Number 358

On the other hand, I think he finally did get that Colt .45 he kept talking about... So tell us Jagermeister... what is the muzzle velocity of that 32 oz. load?

I shoot 230gr ball out of my Colt Rail Gun with avg. Vo of about 850fps to 900fps.

Nice. When they have 16 ga I will look at them. I currently use 16 ga RST 2 1/2" Falcon Lites, 1125 fps, 7/8 oz, #8's. They work perfectly fine on clays. $11 a box or $110 a case of 250.

They offer other shot sizes in the 2 1/2" game bore shells too.

The low recoil 3/4oz. 2 1/2's only come in #8's so far. I think that in a 3/4oz. shot load, #8's would be better to provide an adequate shot count in the pattern.

I was finally able to get my hands on a few flats and ran 150 of them through my 1875 era Scottish hammergun last night. All I can say is that they are fantastic! I thought that the 3/4 oz. and no choke would let me down but I was wrong. I was shooting sporting clays and did not find a presentation I could not break. Nothing over 40 yards though. For sure my new go-to round for my short chambered English guns.

I agree with Blue Grouse. I have just ordered another 3 flats. Great ammo. Breaks anything on the sporting clay courses in my area.

Blue Grouse & RichardBrewster, if you don't mind me asking where did you buy your Kent shells from? Looking back through the thread its hard to ascertain the source for the shells. Is it directly from Kent?

Thanks in advance!

I got it from Huntstuff.com. They are in Virginia. Shipped it came to about $73 or so per flat.

I purchased mine from the local sporting clays course near Calgary and I believe that they are sold out, so not much help there. I think that they ordered around 40 cases and they were gone in a couple of weeks. Yesterday, I spoke with the Canadian distributor and he indicated that they were also sold out of the first order that they received, which was part of the first production run on these shells made in the USA. He said they were waiting for another production run in order to get more in stock. The implication being that the US distributor is also out of them at the moment...
I certainly hope that this was not an experiment and they become a staple item for Kent to produce!
The other 2.5" shells we can get in Canada are $25.00 a box, so way too expensive to burn up on clays...
