I have been offered a Vaver receiver sight currently mounted to a 1903. Two questions:
Firstly, how is the sight removed?

Secondly, what are they worth these days?

Thanks!

Hoot 4570,

The Vaver receiver sight is one of the first sights designed to be a one-sight-fits-all rifles. The sight is attached to a mounting block made for a particular rifle. In the case of the 1903 Springfield, Vaver made two different sight-mounting blocks.
Of the more than one hundred sights made for the 1903 Springfield in my collection I consider it to be in the top five of my favorites.  A really neat sight!
Type I

I'll refer to the mounting blocks of the early model as Type1.

It is attached to the receiver with one large screw. That large screw can be seen under the elevation bar which is set in the receiver at about the 11:00 o’clock position.
At this point, the elevation bar can be removed with a clock-wise turning of the dial. Once the elevation bar is removed, the large screw can be seen, removed and the block and sight can be separated.

Type 2 (a little more complicated)

Remove elevation bar the same way as for Type 1.
Depress the small lever at the bottom of the sight and turn the dial counter-clockwise to remove.
The two screws that you can now see are holding the block to the receiver. Remove these two screws and separate the block from the receiver. Then remove the two screws attaching the block to the sight and remove the sight.

They show up from time to time on ebay, most commonly for Winchester Model 52's. Here is an example

Gary, I have to ask, what are your top favorite sights for 1903's?
