How do I best maintain a butt plate made of horn? Can I put stock oil on it? The gun is almost 100 years old and haven't been used (or maintained)for more than 25 years.

Remove the butt plate and allow to soak in a coat of neatsfoot oil for a day or so before replacing. Mink oil might also might help. Ken

Always store the gun muzzle down, to keep the insects from chewing it...

Both oils may benefit the horn. Just do not over do the treatment. You don't want it to soften very much.
This is the very first that I have heard that one may wish to "treat" horn. I have only kept it clean.
Remember that this is, even organic, a dead material. Feeding the fibres is BS.
Best,
John

All good suggestions. These folks deal in ivory and horns. This is their recommendation for restoring the oils to a piece. Scroll down towards the bottom of the page:

Another question related to this topic: I have a horn buttplate with a few worm holes, approx. 1/8" wide and about the same deep. Is there a good way to fill them?

thanks

I have used Acraglass with floc and black pigment powder to fill beetle holes. I fill the holes with the epoxy on a teethpick, cover with tape and let it cure with the butt down. After hardening remove the tape, file, sand with a hard flat block, burnish with steel wool. Ihen apply Truoil, let it dry for a day and burbish/polish with 0000steel wool, this may take more than one coat. I have used this technique on many, many pieces of horn buttpalates and grip caps, carefully dune the repair is hard to see. Jerry

I recall reading in the Medieval Meathead Times, shortly after the latest discussion of stock finishing with cottonseed oil, that an overnite soaking in sheep urine would restore and/or preserve horn grip caps and butt plates like no other method.

As a FYI, horn is a protein, commonly known as keratin, a lot like your fingernails.
