And we all have shotguns that we have patterned with different chokes. Clearly, different things happen in each. I am not so sure I trust fluid dynamics to tell me much of anything about chokes in guns. I trust it pretty well in garden hoses. Good thot! And a choke is not a nozzle. The shot mass is not liquid. The choke effect is the result of a number of forces acting on a collection of discrete and interacting bodies

Well, if one has deep enough pockets and modern steel-shot capable gun upland HeviShot loads make issues go away. Heck the entire load is comprised of "deformed fliers" yet patters at long range don't seem to be affected. One can even substitute 7.5 for 6s and still kill long way off. Seems like heavenly load to me.

No one would use 7.5s on waterfowl around here, Jager. The traditional Eastern Shore load was lead No.4 on ducks, larger for geese.

"This is a description of the phenomenon, not an explanation or understanding of it."
Sorry I can't help with anything more metaphysical or philosophical.
"Thanks but I'll retreat to other environs. I'm not finding what I was looking for."
Perhaps pose the question to Dr. Phil.
I can hear it now....

In the Beginning, there was no choke.
And the skies were black with ducks.
Then Pape and Kimble and Tonks and Greener (who sensed a business opportunity) said 'Let there be choke!'.
And there was choke.
There was great rejoicing all over the land and marshes and ducks fell like rain.
Then somebody stood back and asked...
"How the hell does this work?'.
And great befuddlement ensued, arguments started, patterns were analyzed, books were written, chins all across the land were pulled.
To no avail.
Then the great Jones descended from the heavens and with the aid of computers and probably a bottle of scotch or two, all was explained!
Sort of.
The End.

Brent, Well, you have proven that you are highly technical and not a shotgun novice. But I'm not sure many questions have been answered. There are factors that may influence this discussion which we have not even touched upon such as the length and harmonics of the barrel.
I've been told in previous posts on this forum that gun barrels such as my gunsmith described to me never existed and were never made.
I will point out that in my younger years there was often a consensus among shooters as to who had the best shotgun. I have seen groups of seven or eight men with almost identical guns and one gun shot tighter no matter who was shooting. In those days turkey shoots were held at 50 yards not 35. And a true long-range gun had to perform at 80 yards not 40. The general conclusion that I have reached is that while internal choke is certainly the most dominant factor, the shape of the bore is the deciding factor.

That's how it was explained to me. I never questioned it. P.S. Rocketman, will you please put your comment OUTSIDE the damn quote box so we can determine what YOU ARE SAYING!!

Or go back to using red letters.
So many guns, so little time!
