I'm looking for a Lyman 77 Front sight. It is detachable much like a Lyman Supertarget spot detaches from its blocks. Anyway, I found one designated "AK". Does that code for something like the size of the dovetail it will fit? I can't measure it directly so I'm trying to find out what size of a dovetail it will fit.
Thanks, Brent

The AK code is the heigth of the base itself that the sight attaches to. They sold 5(?) different dovetail heigth bases ,,the AK was the lowest. I think it's .185 tall not including the dovetail itself. Dimension is supposed to be from the top of the bbl. I don't recall what size te dovetail is on those bases. They also sold a round bottom base to attach w/ 2 screws to the bbl. Same idea,,had several heigth options all with a different letter code.
The sight itself came in two different heights, 77R (regular) and a 77H (High). I don't recall what the heigth difference is between the two but betw the 2 sight heights and the different bases you could pretty well get the needed heigth you wanted on a particular rifle.
Hope this helps.

Yes, that helps immensely. Height is ultra important on my .45 muzzleloader. Getting low enough to shoot 200 yds is a real challenge and I have to switch out rear sight staffs and go to a noncentered front aperture to do it. I would love to have front sights of that would be easy to trade on and off. I'll have to search for some of the taller combinations.
Thanks again. Brent

Any of that style Lyman that slides on a target scope style base will end up being pretty tall just because of the added base. I have a couple I use in conjunction with long range vernier tang sights, but trying to use them with mid range can even limit distances I shoot.

I ran accross this in 'Old Gunsights' / Strobel
Lyman 77R - .451 high 77H - .773 high
Heigth is to center of aperture.
Dovetail Bases AK - .185 BK - .260 K - .300 KK - .370
Height of dovetail style base does not include bbl dovetail attachment itself. When attached and installed, O/A height will be from the bbl surface to the center of the aperture.
Screw on bases A - .167 B - .225 C - .315 D - .415 E - .475
77 sight uses same inserts as the 17A Target Front sight.

I read all the #'s w/o my glass, but I think they are correct!
