First of all, I would like to thank Thaine for finding that workaround that enables us to see all those images that we thought might be lost forever. LRF mentioned that he is starting to save the images, that got me to thinking.
1. What is the easiest way of doing this? 2. What are some threads that you think are really outstanding and worth keeping?
I've found that saving threads as pdf's is pretty good. Especially, if you edit your preferences before saving things to pdf files. You can go into "My Stuff" and "Edit Preferences", things that you'd want to changes are
Total posts to show on one page when viewing a post in flat mode: (default is 10)
set this to the max 99
doing this will allow you to get the entire thread in one go, unless it is really long
Turn off the left column? Yes No
Set this to "yes"
If anyone wants to see what a pdf file of a thread looks like, send me a pm with your e-mail address and I will send you one. I am sure that people here will make suggestions for improvements, please do. I'd love to hear suggestions for favorite threads.

If I have a site or thread I really think I'll want to return to I simply add the page to my "favorites" for my searches on my browser. Then I can open them and see them with just one click of the mouse later.

Vall, only as long as the pictures or for that matter the forum still exists. I think what Vall and I to a lessor extent are trying to figure out a way of saving Michael's valuable threads, which I might add was discussed back when we got the sad news of Michael's death. Fred, the thread on side scope mounts would be a great one to save and also the one about cleaning classic rifles. If you need links let me know.

Here's what I do, your milage may vary but it works for me. I save web pages as a complete web page. In Chrome a "ctrl S" will open the window. This creates a folder and a separate shortcut link with the same name. To view the page, click on the shortcut. I can go to the folder and all of the photos in the thread, stored on my drive, will be available to work with separately in a photo editor. The cleaning thread above resulted in a 1.71 megabyte folder. I went to the date of the last post and opened "all" and then saved it. I don't know if this is an efficient method or not as far as size, but it has worked for years for me. I use a Terabyte drive in my desktop with a separate terabyte drive for backup. I run my system off a 250 GB solid state drive for speed.
I need to investigate Fred's PDF method and see how that works. But now you have two methods to chose from.
Thanks for the tips, turning off the left column helps a bunch!
Thaine

OK, I just finished comparing document size for three variations of saving a web page.
1. Saving as a complete web page gave me two files, a folder with separate pictures etc and a shortcut. These were sized 1.71MB & .440MB respectively for a total of 2.15MB
2. Saved as a PDF by going to print and changing destination to print as PDF gave me a 3.95MB size file.
3. Using same procedures in #2 and saving as an XPS file, viewable with the free XPS viewer MS has, gave me a file sized 4.08MB.
Options 2 & 3 did not provide separate photos in my test and that is something I want. In addition file size is almost doubled by methods 2&3. Granted this is a very limited and unscientific test using only one sample, the cleaning thread, but I think I will stick to my old way of saving them as a complete web page. If I am doing something wrong or someone knows another trick or two please post it. Thaine
