Anyone know if the .410 Stevens 311 came with 24" barrels? An acquaintance is looking at an older one in a local shop and the proprietor is stating the barrels are original. I can't find any reference to 24" barrels on .410's. Thanks.

I have all the Savage/Stevens/Fox catalogs from the years the Model 311 was offered and the only .410-bore barrel length offered was 26-inch. From 1974 to 78 the Fox Model B in 12- and 20-gauge was offered with 24-inch barrels. That is the only offering of 24-inch barrels I could find.

Didn't think 24" barrels were ever available but the shop owner is insisting that he is the "expert" on these matters and the subject barrels are original. Dennis

Weren't those short barrels the ones used on the Simmons Quails Fargo guns? I may be mixing up two different things.

My question is, why would anyone want a 311 .410? Even though the gun's built on a 12 gauge frame and weighs a ton it literally has no balls! Seriously, I really like .410's but the 311 is so painful to look at I don't think I could ever own one. It's only redeeming features are that it has two barrels and two triggers. They should've made it an O/U.

they did make an O/U .410, the 242, on the same action as the 24 combo guns. It is even uglier than the 311 .410, and that takes some serious ugly!
I believe the "Quails Fargo" is a completely different gun.

A little research shows that the Quails Fargo was a Savage product: A version of the Stevens 311 with 24" barrels and a Simmons rib. But they all seem to be 20's. No .410.

During the sixties, Simmons Specialties of Kansas City decided to offer their own branded shotgun and contracted with Savage/Stevens to convert a variant of the Stevens Model 311 20 gauge; stock 311 24" barrel, case colored receiver, and double triggers converted to a single trigger. Simmons would then install a vent rib with a "glow-worm" front bead. They ceased production in 1969. Simmons also offered a Dakin Gun Co. "Quails Fargo" with 22" VR barrels choked Sk 1 / Sk 2 made by Gaspar Arizaga.

Interesting--Thanks!
I knew of the "Dakin" gun--a friend of mine in the 1970s used one on California quail very effectively--as long as we were in the thick stuff. Not so effective on the wild flushers. His was the single trigger version, but it worked (for at least two seasons...).
Never knew about the Savage version, until now!

Well I am on a very limited income but through the years have managed to acquire a collection of field guns of one or more of most every Vintage American SXS excepting a Win Model 21 that I may never afford. Vintage American .410's are a bit pricey so I jumped at the chance to work off a 311 .410 as I never owned a SXS 410. It is definitely on a 410 frame and may not be as sleek as others and I replaced the wood with Fox model B stocks it sure pleases me. It weighs 6 lb 8 oz, a bit heavy but by gosh I have a SXS 410 to shoot with my friends that have 410's. So that's why I for one have one and I rather enjoy it as I hit well with it.
