The north country is pretty nice this time of year:

I refer to this shot as "hillbilly heaven":

My 13-year old wanted to come fish with dad and grandad this time. They sure grow up fast. Hunter safety this summer and then.....gulp (!) I'll have company on the trails this Fall.

I'm not losing my place, am I?

I imagine Junior can put the hurt on Grampa's larder. You guys might have to get busy.

Ted

You're pretty safe Ted, he'd rather drive Grampa's lawnmower and boat. I also expect that he'll want to go hunt a bit with Grampa too. Like many (if not most) of his generation (Gen Z?) he's more into computers and cellphones than far-less glamorous things that require an extensive delayed-gratification component. The jury is clearly still out here, but he's remains a very fussy eater and only just tries what I bring home. Until the connection between food and pursuit gets made I'm guessing he'll only be a lukewarm participant, but you just never know. What I do know is that I didn't really seize onto hunting and fishing until my late 20s. Up until that point, there were far too-many other distractions. I liked it as a kid, but I didn't love it until much later (when I needed it for my sanity).

Also, you aren't kidding about the larder. He's grown almost a full foot since last Fall and he eats constantly. It's still mostly kiddie crap, but it is constant. Keeping him in cloths (and now braces!) seems to be the bigger expense at the moment.

Whew Lloyd. You are describing my next few years. The boy turns 13 in October and while the growth spurt hadn't hit yet, it is on the horizon.

Not much in the way of birds unless you are counting Canada Geese. Which I'm seeing in places around LOTW I've never seen them before. Everything is very lush. Not quite wet but evidence of lots of rain this spring. Truthfully, the only birds I've seen since Monday, besides songbirds, are geese, vultures, pelicans and of course Bald Eagles. Damn things are all over our island.

Ted, we have so many lakes full of fish it's impossible to go anywhere without driving past 7000 of them! Lol

James: It does seem very lush on the south end as well. I believe my Father-in-law has related to me that the spring there was cool but really not very wet. In his now-annual spring morel mushroom foraging activities (he also sugars there and picks the local berries endlessly) he found things to be fairly dry and.... he both heard and later saw fairly good numbers of birds. He takes that to mean better-than-average nesting success.... which (from experience) I now translate into very good bird numbers in September & October.
