I'm looking for black powder (sub) and cannon fuse in the Los Angeles area. The Stockade used to carry it but has dropped all of the black powder stuff from what I hear.

Good luck.

It appears these days most gun/sporting goods stores don't want to sell it because of the hassle...the uninformed think all we need are the substitutes. In the Memphis Tennessee area it's carried by only one gun/sporting goods store Bass-Pro shop, years back it was sold by several.
The only choice I have is mail order or be price gouged by Bass-Pro.

Chuck: Call Bain & Davis Sporting Goods in San Gabriel. Pete Stepanski is the owner and resident pistolsmith, and I know that he is a pretty serious black powder shooter. This is one of the few remaining, old fashioned gun shops with two (yes, two) gunsmiths on the premises (Steve Matthews does the long guns), and for those old enough to remember, is also the home of the wildcat .357/44 B&D conversions. That's a .44 Mag case necked to .357 for a modified Ruger Super Blackhawk or S&W N-Frame (although they prefer the Ruger for strength). Wowee!

You might also try Phillips Supply (reloading stuff and loaded ammo) somewhere around Azuza. If you can't find the listing, the boys at Ivory Beads can direct you to Phillips.

Lock, Stock & Barrel in Temple City used to have a lot of black powder stuff, so you might call them, too.

Replacement,
I'll give them a call. Thanks for the tip.

I'd wondered what happened to Steve Matthews. He sold his family store on Paramount some time ago. Steve has talent that he's been hiding under a lack of enthusiasm for years. I wish him the best over at B&D. Whatever happened to his loyal sidekick, the guy who's name escapes me but worked for him? He was a good egg as well.

Chuck, I had the same problem here in our area with all the sporting goods stores and gun shops no longer handling BP the last time I went to buy some.

I finally discovered a local black powder club that bought it in bulk and stored it in a powder magazine on a ranch out of town. They would sell you all you wanted at less than $10 per pound. Only drawback was that you had to join the club for an exorbitant annual membership fee of 10 bucks...ha.

Just might be worth checking the yellow pages or inquiring at the local gun shops for a BP Club if the sources suggested above don't work out.

You might check with the black powder sales reps...they should know of a dealer in your area.

Why NOT mail order? You can mail order in lots as small as 5# from Powder Inc.

Canon fuse? Be honest Chuck, do you have a 6 pounder in the front yard?

These folks are not in LA, but might be able to help you.

Chuck: Steve Matthews sold Matthews & Sons about three or four years ago to a couple of retired cops. They lasted about ten months, then had a going out of business sale. Steve stayed on during the transition, since he was the only real gunsmith in the bunch. I think B&D bought some of their inventory. Steve is too young to retire, so he works at B&D about three days per week, stays in back where he is happy playing with our toys without having to deal with us (much). His sidekick (whose name also escapes me) was a Downey city employee as his day job,and worked at the shop for fun and camraderie (and cash, of course). Good guy, have not seen him since the store closed.

Steve is a very good gunsmith, and has worked on a number of my guns. Also gives really good advice, when you can get him to talk.
