And I figure this one might be key to the whole scheme of things.

Thanks, hope he does. Like to see how the inletting is done compared to others including myself. Am I in the ballpark or still in the bleachers. Love the rear sight, wish I had one.

I can take some photos of the inletting tomorrow. I wanted it mostly for the rear sight and the buttplate. I was surprised when I found the HOWE stamped in the barrel channel. I don't really see anything that looks James V Howe to me, does anyone see anything?
I'm also puzzled by the caliber marking, does it look like maybe the way Newton marked his 30-06?
I don't think the barrel is GI as it doesn't have the pin slot on the bottom and the rifling looks a bit different.
The serial number falls in the Mark I range so it was probably a 1920 NM action.

PG, not to steal Dan's thunder, but I believe I can shed some light on the sight. It is the rear sight used on the first Remington model 30s if I am not mistaken. I had the opportunity to buy one in the 8XX serial range a few years back and it had this and one in the low 1XXX range just sold recently on Gun Broker with this sight. There is one, although modified on eBay right now. Sight
I am sure Dan will correct me if I am wrong.

Thaine,

I did not know the source of the little peep sight so I can't correct you!

Dan, I think your correct about Newton barrel markings and the rifling. From the close-up pic of the muzzle it appears to be the "segmental" or round type Newton used on his model 1916. One sure way to find out is to see if the extractor cut continues to the left side of receiver. Newton made his barrels that way for gas escape to the left side.
The grip cap also looks to be from a model 1916 Newton. Check to see if there are serial numbers on it.
I don't see anything Jas. V Howe either. Notice how shallow the receiver was inletted at the breech. Didn't even need wood removed at the loading port.
