Can anyone point me to a source for brass for a .450 No. 1 Musket cartridge? I'm looking at a rifle chambered for that caliber and haven't had a great deal of luck in my search.

Thanks.

Remington40x,
I think you could make cases from either 50-140(3 1/4")Sharps cases. They would be a few thousandths small, in head diameter, but this should be of no consequence. Depending on the particular rifle, you may have to thin the rim and/or adjust the diameter. You will have to trim it to length. As an alternative, you might try 50-140 Win., which would be a little smaller still, but should be OK with reasonable loads, or 50-110 Win., which would also be a little short, but you could load the bullet "out". Kynoch has started loading some cartridges again, with boxer primers. By now, they might include 450 No. 1 Musket; it would be worth your while to check their website, to see.

Last Dollar:

Buffalo Arms lists dies, but is out of stock. They list a cartridge case for a 500-.450 No. 1 Carbine, which I'm not sure is the same cartridge, but might be. I will try them and see if they know for sure.

Der Ami:

Thanks, but I don' think the 50-140 will be a good starting point.

The .450 No. 1 Musket is not the .450 No. 1 cartridge that I believe you are thinking about. It's an early 500-.450 cartridge with a case less than 2 inches long and shooting a lead bullet in the 260-270 grain range. An early deer rifle.

.50-70 might work, but I'd need forming and sizing dies and I'm trying to avoid that if I can find an alternative that lets me just neck size and reload.

Might want to check with <xringservices@yahoo.com> They were able to provide new 500/450 #2 musket cases for me, also saw a thread that says #1 musket brass available

The 500-450 No.1 designation was used for the Express, Musket and Carbine cartridges.
