I have a falling block action that hopefully soon i will be able to fit a barrel to and then have stocked. On the barrel i will need to fit the front and rear sight bases, a sling swivel and a fore-end hanger. These will have to be soldered on and that got me thinking about barrel temper.

I have seen videos of double rifles having their regulation done by the wedge in the end of the barrels and solder melted etc, and on single barrel rifles, having sights etc soldered on.

If you heat the barrel up to a temp where solder melts and then let it cool slowly, surely the barrel will be annealed ? Are barrels not heat treated after manufacture, are they left in their annealed state ?

First of all tell us more about your falling block.

Secondly, barrels are not heat treated and you will cause no harm by soft soldiering anything to it.

bonny,
Use soft solder, it will flow at a much lower temp. than critical temp. of barrel steel.

Westley Richards 1897 action, to be honest, while its nice i would prefer a Webley 1902 to play with, but i have a love of most things Webley.

The Westley is the cream of the crop design wise....rebounding hammer and small diameter inline firing pin make it perfect for the higher pressure rounds without the typical extraction issues most Brit falling blocks experience. The Webley is good design but I found them the least attractive of the lot.

I'm not surprised, WR designs are top notch usually. There is something about the shape of the Webley that appeals too though. Beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that.
