So I bought a nice Austrian 16ga Wertgarner sidelock with chisel engraving,I'm thinking to get complete refinishing, barrels reblued,,wood redone.I see the Wertgarner factory is still in business..I was thinking about contacting them to see if they would do the work.Does anyone think that's a good ideas?cost and hassle to ship etc, or think I can get just as good job here USA ?

rollback,
It is your gun, to do with as you please. To answer your other question, when you find out the cost and time of sending it back, you will likely decide the US is the way to go. Yes, you can get just as good a job in the US. Anyway, are you sure Wertgarner is a factory?

rollback,
The name wasn't known to me, so I suspected he is a gunsmith that built/builds guns from parts produced on the "associations" equipment, or retails guns produced by others. I'm not so vain as to think I know all the names, however. Whether it is worthwhile is entirely up to you, depending on their cost, the lead time, the trouble and time in shipping both ways( since you have it here, you won't have to have a lot of trouble, getting it back), balanced by the small advantage of having the work done by them. If you can't live with the condition, you might think about having only parts of the work done, maybe just have the barrels blued, for instance.

It is a shop and a gunmaker since 1820:

http://www.wertgarner.at/ws/frontend/seite/SeiteAnzeigen.php?seite=ueberuns

and of course they have the knowledge to restaure your gun, see example:

http://www.wertgarner.at/ws/frontend/partner/PartnerShop.php?arId=a00000035&intWarengruppeId=407

But I think, you will get this knowledge in the U.S. of America as well, as Mike said.
Especially if you think on transport and costs, the european solution should be second choice...

Cheers,
Gunwolf

rollbac,
You didn't post photos, so we can't see the crossbolt. If it only protrudes a little, it may have been set up that way; if the top lever is right of center, it likely was. New guns were often set up this way to allow for wear. The crossbolt on the gun in Wertgarner's website is protruding slightly, so it seems that is their way. Any of the gunsmiths in the Trade Directory of WAIDMANNSHEIL( one of the publications of the German Gun Collectors Assn.)can accomplish the work for you.

rollbac,
Now I remember the thread. Just call up the German Gun Collectors Assn.'s web site.
