"Laminated steel". Is this a fancy term for plain old damascus twist barrels or is laminated steel something different entirely ? I picked up a gun today that i assumed looking at it previously was damascus, but stamped faintly on the barrels just forward of the flats, is "laminated steel".

Laminated Steel is one of the "pattern welded" or composite barrels. It is made in a similar fashion to Damascus steel but uses a different process or formule of stacking the bundles of iron and steel 'leaves'. There are several different Laminated Steel designs depending on when they were made and who made them.

Some barrels of lower grade guns with "Plain Twist" barrels have been marked Laminated Steel. You can tell these from those mentioned by DAM16SXS by looking at the pattern. The Plain Twist pattern will show a simple spiral.

I have read that in the pressure tests run by the Birmingham Proof House in 1888, "laminated steel" barrels withstood higher pressures before bursting than Whitworth fluid steel and any Damascus steel barrels tested. It is of course possible that barrels might be labeled "laminated steel" but not be the same strong barrels tested by the proof house in 1888. Dr. Drew is very expert in this area and hopefully will chime in.

P.S. Dr. Drew's website "Damascus Knowledge" has photographs of many types of Damascus and laminated steel.

Laminated steel on my old Greener hammer gun. Almost a herringbone pattern, not the best picture, but should give an idea:
