Here is what pisses me off. When a guy calls on the phone and says ""whats your best price" I say I think the price is fair but make me an offer.
He makes an offer and I say I will take it and then he says '"well let me think about it"
JOhn Boyd If they make an offer I can accept, before I accept it I always say, "Are you ready to buy it at that price?" If they say yes then I say "OK, let's do it." They can still back out, but it improves your odds.

That's it; weed out as many customers as possible. Maybe someone else will pay the help at the end of the week...Geo Despite your exaggeration on what was stated, yes, there is a small, but significant percentage of customers that over the long run will cost you more money than you will ever make off them. One of the most important skills you can ever learn as a business owner is to figure out how to identify them, and yes, weed them out.

It helps to take only "hard offers". Don't do any negotiating until the customer gives you a credit card. If they refuse to give you a card number, that tells you right off the bat they are not serious to begin with, and are only wasting your time.
I don't know ANYONE who would give you a card number on a gun deal before a negotiation unless it was with an "I'll take it at your price". They would tell you to pound sand if you asked for a card first, and they WOULD HAVE BEEN a serious buyer. Are you kidding??? Bizarre practice.

Um, I believe that would be "bizarre". There's generally a lot of bargaining that goes on at a bazaar

Yes, I should clarify. Not everyone has the same perspective as to how various gun deals are conducted. I was talking from the perspective of large volume, vintage gun dealer, which a significant proportion of inventory is consignment or commission guns.
If someone inquires about a gun, and wants to know if offers are accepted, they are instructed they then must make a formal offer with a credit card. Once that offer has been passed along, and if approved, that gun is sold at that agreed to price and the card is charged. Not that difficult of a system to implement, and significantly reduces wasted time for the seller, retailer, and in the end reduces cost to the buyer.
Doesn't really work in the gun show sphere or casual seller, but for high volume retailers it is almost a necessity.
Still is amusing to find out how many people are surprised that they might actually have to buy the gun if their offer is accepted.

I had negotiated a price and put my cash on the barrel head. What does any of John Boyds whining or Flintfans stupid ideas about how to run a business have to do with what happened to me?

You had handed over cash, and the seller refused to give you the gun? That is theft of a firearm, a felony. I hope you called the police.
