Sorry to be "that" guy, but I'm hoping one of you mavens can help me identify my "new" double-rifle.

By "new", I mean it's probably over 100 years old. The only mark I've been able to read/reference is on the top rib where it says "Paul Mossiers Hoflieferant Breslau". I've found a few (hardly any) SxS shotguns with this mark, but no rifles.

There's no caliber marking, but it really likes to eat handloaded 43 Mauser cases, once they've been cut back about 1/2 inch, and expanded a touch. It came with a hollowpoint mould, which in a VERY cool twist has the same s/n as the rifle. So I've been feeding it 60gr of FFFg Goex, which it's been chugging through quite happily. I "think" the chamber is one of the 11.5x50R variations. I have some Cerrosafe on the way so I can do a casting to confirm this.

There are three marks on the under-flats of the breach:
Farthest forward is a three-point crown.
Below that is what appear to be a musket, crossed with a pistol and a horn inside an oval.
Below that is a capital S. (I think)
Finally, there's a s/n.
(Yeah, I know, but I haven't figured out how to post photos yet.)

Someone mounted a Weaver J2.5 scope to the top rib, which seems to have been made to accept the mounting.

I bought this rifle to shoot, I like it, it hits hard, and it's fun to shoot cast bullets over black powder. So all that's cool, but it'll be even cooler if I can solve these riddles: When was it made? What's the chamber?

You'd have better luck with identification if you'd posted this in the Double rifle area. Perhaps the owner will move it there for you. I'd also suggest you post some detailed pictures when you can. It sounds like a neat piece!

Now, I've seen some mixed touchmarks but this example is quite perplexing with Belgian, French & German marks. It would be just lovely if this example could speak & tell the tale of its voyage. I'd hasten to hazard a guess it was a German ensemble on a Belgian platform soured from Liege and finished in France?

Cheers,

Thanks guys. I'll forward some photos from home. I think I'll try doing a rubbing of the marks on the flats; they don't show up very well in photos.

As to the double rifle category: Sorry about that. I thought I was doing well to figure out how to post at all. I'm not that familiar with this forum.

The Polish (?) markings are cool. I haven't seen them before in my Googling. They still don't match what I see on the rifle, so I hope the images will give a better picture. (Wink)

Please don't take my earlier post as criticism. It's just that members here have different interests and that was the most appropriate area. However we are all looking forward to pictures of your rifle.
It would also be interesting to hear where you found this rifle and the circumstances under which you acquired it

Hi, you may want to try and rub some white chalk on the markings. It's worked for me in the past quite well. They should show up against the dark metal.

Best!

Raimey, I have a feeling that the gun in the Russian magazine article that you've posted here - along with the drawings - has been made up by the magazine writer to serve as an abstract illustration of "an old imported gun".
