I have been asked to put a value on an 12 ga 1873 Remington double barrel "lifter" hammer gun. Unfortunately the barrels were cut to 18 1/4" at some time. However; I suspect the gun could still be used in Cowboy Action Shooting.
The gun is in otherwise sound condition so I'd be interested in opinions of value.

Saw an otherwise nice BV3 I believe (W&C Scott or similar) with cut barrels at around 18 inches sell on GB recently for $600 or so. Seller was touting it as a potential cowboy action gun. Was surprised it brought as much as it did. You really don't see many hammer guns with the sawed off treatment for comps.

I'm asking for your opinions here. I certainly can come up with a value as parts but I suspect in may be worth more as a cowboy shooter. I don't engage in sport this but I assume others on this forum do.

Unless the CAS event is hammerguns only, no one who wants to score high or win is likely to want to use it.
Are you sure on the barrel length? Seems to me like at 18 1/4 it might move into Class 3 land, and all that goes with that.

Time is money.
One sale vs 10 sales as parts over years?
Best bet is the paranoid geezer set that frequent gun shows and internet sites. (The younger crowd moved on to social media years ago). Might offer it as an imaginary home defense weapon. Take a picture of it, hammers back, hanging by the front door. Might go quick.

I'd prefer to say, unless you are really attached to it, to send it down the road as an add-on to another deal for as close to 100.00 as you can con someone into agreeing to. Save yourself the headache of selling it.

Other than as a movie prop, it's a parts storage device in this world.

It's not a good competitive choice for gun games. It's cumbersome to use, takes special ammo, etc.

Out there doing it best I can.

The legal limit for CL III is 18" minimum and I measured this one to make sure the barrels were longer then that. The owner doesn't want to sell it as it's an inherited piece. I will inform them of the price. Thanks to all for your help.

I used to shoot cowboy, and used a hammer gun both for authenticity and because I liked them. And I would consider a gun such as this for a few hundred as a fun one to play around with at hand thrown clays and such. If I was looking, I doubt I'd pay more than $400 or so for it. So that's the dollar figure I'd say it's worth lol

This is in the ballpark with what I have in mind. Thanks!

Watch a youtube video of a cowboy shooter single loading a Model 97 Winchester and then tell me what you think a hammer double barrel is worth to those guys.
