I've noticed on their website that Merkel's base sxs is now listed as a 40E, which looks like a 47E with a silver receiver, no side clips, no cocking indicators, and s very printed-on looking laser engraving pattern.

I can't seem to find any information on the 47E being discontinued, however. Has anyone heard?

I just had it confirmed by LCS, the 47e has been replaced by the 40e with laser engraving.

40e was always the European designation for the 47e....but it does look like they have cheapened it again.....

Looks like they've decided to sell them as 40e's in both markets.

I don't really care about cocking indicators, but I liked the side clips and case colors. Not to mention, the new "engraving" looks horrible! It would've been better if they didn't engrave it at all and just blued the receiver, in my opinion.

Modern mass-produced Merkel like 40e represents poor value for the money. While presentation is poor and external finish is good the internal fit of parts is very poor hand fitting being virtually non-existent. This translates to very user unfriendly gun that is difficult to operate when fist used.

Lowly pre-war Geco 'Ejector' assembled on J.P. Sauer action can be had for percentage of 40e cost and is far, far superior firearm. One gets very good finish, nicely shaped action, wood, checkering and horn butt plate plus pistol grip cap. Where it really beats modern low grade Merkel is how well internal parts plus action to frame are mated. The result of more careful hand fitting is that like new sample from 1930s is very easy to use from the start ie knee is not needed to break open the gun.

PS. I forgot to add that sadly things aren't going to change because Merkel is made in country with high wages and excellent social programs for its citizens which is the way things should be.

Jagermeister, you do not even own a double. What do you get out of regurgitating what you read elsewhere? Why don't you give us a review on your one and only shotgun... a late model short barreled Model 37 Ithaca pump?

Do you actually own that Model 37 pump, or do you rent it like your .22 rifle? I didn't even know you could rent guns until you told us about your rentals. You learn something here every day.

I take it you disagree with his assessment?

Which assessment, the one on the gun... which came from somebody else, or the one on the benefits of Socialism... which came from Jagermeister?

Jagermeister, by his own admission, does not even own a double. I hardly think he can accurately evaluate the function of a Merkel 47E or any other double by racking the slide on his Ithaca pump. He spent the last several years in Misfires voicing his support for Obama and other anti-gun Liberal Left politicians. That is what he knows best. That is where he shines.
