Has anyone experienced or heard of a Rottweil O/U having barrel issues at the monobloc i.e. violent rupture of one or both of the barrels?

Do the remains look something like this?



There have been several threads on Trapshooters.com discussing blow ups recently. I don't recall Rottweil being mentioned, but it would be extraordinary if reloads were not involved.

Unfortunately, the various interlocutors, including myself, are only expressing opinions and to my knowledge there have been no published results of a failure analysis or metallurgical study. Guns sent to the manufacturer tend to disappear without a follow-up report.

I shot my Rottweil 72 International Skeet gun with Tula chokes
just last week for 3 rounds of skeet, no issues.

Thank you both for your comments. I do not own a Rottweil , but was asked the question. I checked the net and found some sites where guns had blown-up. Some were rather well known brands.

One blew up here in Minnesota several years ago. The gentleman shooting it was notorious for his poor reloads. Many would not shoot with him. I'm sure he would have had a catastrophic failure with ANY gun he was shooting.

With regards to detonations, anything that changes the burn rate of a powder can cause a shell to detonate.

A common one was micro loading 30-06 cartridges for varmints. The powder rolls around in the long case and grinds itself so finely it detonates in the case rather than steadily burning.

I've not heard of any Rottweil barrels splitting at the monoblock.

Morons semi-following poor reloading processes that blow up multiple barrels should be scorned and avoided.

One guy I know had cartridges rolling around on the dash of his truck from coyote hunting. Loading/unloading between stands. Blew the chamber on his Vanguard, which I think has 9 lugs as I recall. At least he admitted fault. We all knew how super fine powder would react.

Back in 1976 there was a silo explosion nearby, and my father and cousins climbed up into the towers to rescue the injured. 5 dead. Powdered grain dust ignited. Like a 10 story bomb.

In addition, what is the purpose of the three small holes visible under each of the extractors/ejectors? They appear to be between each barrel and the monobloc.

My frirst impression is "barrel obstruction", rather than hot handload. Not knowing what components(if he handloaded)were used, I guess a base wad comming loose could be an obstruction.
