This is kind of a want ad and also looking for information. Figured I might get more here in this section than the classifieds.

I have a JP Sauer built mauser 98 in 30.06. There is some wood Inletted out under the bolt release, and I understand there was a type of Lyman sight that attaches to the release. I assume this is what may have originally been on the rifle.

What is the correct Lyman sight number for this type? Is it 35?
Anyone maybe have one or have a source for one? I am interested in putting one back on it.

Yes you are looking for a Lyman 35, seem to be commonly used on the J.P. Sauer sporting Mausers. The one I owned had one on it too. Keep an eye out on Ebay, they are hard to find and costly. usually 400$ plus.

Yes. That is it. I am sure that is what was on the rifle since there is about 1/8" or more of wood Inletted out under the bolt release with a couple small clearance notches. And I can not think of any other reason for it.

My JP Sauer 98 sported has a Lyman 35, an excellent piece of gear. I believe my Sauer was made for the American market and retailed by A&F.

I have wondered if the Lyman Sight was installed by the American distributor.

B.Dudley,
I am interested in this thread because I just came into a Mauser Oberndorf 30-06 with a Lyman 35 sight(not for sale)mounted. It has "US 1906" on the reciever ring, and Germany on the removeable floorplate(pre WW1 "Army Model" w/stepped round barrel and 2 stage trigger). Are any of these features on your rifle?Mine has a base ahead of the reciever that may have been either a undovetailed sight base,or where a tangent sight was removed and the base milled flat.Does yours have any other sights other than the missing Lyman? Mine is Serial numbered in the 1912 range, is yours pre WW1 or Post( pre would be Oberndorf and would have Mauser number under the reciever and on rear of Mag box).If post, it would be a surplus military action w/markings removed.
Post Oak,
What about yours? If you think the Lyman was mounted later, does it have other sights?

Mike

It has a leaf style rear sight, the Lyman Sight has a different finish that the rest of the Sauer. If installed by Sauer on a rifle of this quality wouldn't the same type of finish be used ?

Mine is a JP Sauer built rifle. It is marked as so on the raised matter rib. It does have a rear site with one flip up sight. And a front sight. However, the front sight does stand a bit taller than the rear sight. I understand that the Lyman 35 required the use of a taller front sight.

Aside from the wood Inletted out under the bolt release for the Lyman, the other thing that made me suspicious of the rear sight that is currently on my rifle is that it is barely able to be seen over the receiver ring. I have another 98 safari rifle in 30.06 (with 28" barrel no less), that has a grove cut in the receiver ring for better sighting path. This one does not and I can barely see the rear sight over the ring.

I suspect that the Lyman was removed at one time and this rear sight just thrown in or something. Who knows.

Well, not looking anymore. I just bought the one that was on eBay.

Funny thing is that I know the guy who was selling it, I say him just a week ago at the local gun show. I would have never thought he would have had one, so I never asked.

This my Chic Worthing G33/40, .338/06, with a Lyman 35. Since my presbyopia has made peeps difficult to use I have been considering mounting a scope...right click for the full size image.
