Some elements of Sedgley style there. Be interesting to know if it's marked in the bolt track.

That's a Noske scope and mount, with the extra long eye relief which allows the scope to be positioned far enough forward that it clears the bolt handle, thus obviating the need to alter it for low scope.
The scope and mount are easily worth what the whole rifle brought. A case of the seller not knowing what he was selling.

Look's like the cat is out of the bag. Yes, I did the buy-it-now on this. It is at my dealer's and Story, you are right, it is a Sedgley, my dealer says that it is marked Sedgley on the barrel. XAUSA, when I first saw the rifle on gunbroker, I thought, wow that is a Noske scope and mount and that was the basis for the buy-it-now decision, I knew it wouldn't last long. The next day, it dawned on me that it was probably a Sedgley. The seller, I suspect, works on black rifles and probably took in as a partial payment for some tricked out AR-15 and just wanted to move it quickly. He seemed like a nice guy when I spoke with him on the phone. My dealer lives some distance away, and our schedules are messed up by the holiday. I hope to pick it up relatively soon and will give a full report with pictures.
I thought a lot about Michael this past weekend, how much he, his books, this forum and the friends I've made here have encouraged me to pursue fine bolt action firearms. I reread the chapter on his Hutton, Chapter 18 of Volume II.

Young guys don't want Springfields and there are not enough of us old dudes around to make much of a dent in the market. There are lots of Model 12s and Springfield sporters just laying around out there because if it's not black or cammo it won't sell. A friend just amazed a group of young hunters by shooting a peep sighted Model 71 accurately at 300 yds. It's different gun world than it was 15 years ago.

Sorry Fred but I couldn't pass up the reference to you in the start thread from Texraid. Laugh when I read that. Anyway you deserve the congrats...you spend a lot of time looking and deserve a morsel every now and then. Wait till we sometime tell them what you and I did together...LOL, my lips are sealed until you tell them more.

Fred, I should have known you got it, the master of dredging the internet finding collectible morsels from unsuspecting victims with pennies on the dollar.

This brings up a more poignant subject. As Michael's collection has been scattered to the four winds I can't help but to think the next generation of buyers will not see the value as we do.

Congrats PhysDoc If I had seen it quick enough I would have dropped everything and drove the 135 miles as quick as I could before the seller wised up and changed his mind. Glad you got it. A rifle like this deserves to be owned by someone who owns it because they appreciate it for what it is.

Thanks for the kind words and congratulatory comments, and thanks even more for all the things that I've learned here over the years. Lynn, I don't know if I would have ever really known what a Noske scope was it it hadn't been for this thread that you started scopes and mounts So as Thanksgiving approaches, let me just say that I am thankful for you guys and your knowledge and kindness. I hope to pass as much as I can to my children. drduc, for what is worth, I hear you. My first shotgun was a Model 12 featherweight, now it seems like everyone including my older brother wants a Bennelli. I wonder how much things will swing back. I've got a fair number of returning soldiers in my classes, for those of them that are into guns, I wonder how their tastes will evolve over time.

PhysDoc That thread was one of Michael's best for a teaching/learning moment. His collecting and sharing helped us all.
Hard to imagine I know but someday the black rifle will be like the Springfield...the only question is what will be developed to replace the black rifle.

I find myself wishing that others would post follow-up pictures to the guns they won on auctions and then thinking that I owe some follow-up pictures and a few other things as well. So, I am going to start here with some pictures of the rifle in this tread. To refresh your memories, it was listed on gunbroker as simply Springfield 30-06 sporter with a buy-it-now price of $285 It is a Sedgley 1903 with a Noske scope and sidemount. Someone also kept the slide for the Lyman 48 sight with it and a set of leather scope covers. I asked Dan to run the serial number after I took possession of it, and he said that it was listed as a National Match which explains the star-gauge mark at the end of the barrel you can see a portion of a barrel date just to the side of the front sight and while the bolt has been polished, the electropenciled serial number is still visible The downside is that the stock is cracked just by the end of the triggerguard, I think it happened early on and the rifle was just put in a rack where it sat for a long time. Hopefully this winter, I will get the stock fixed up

That crack looks like one that is easily and invisibly reparable. As fresh as it looks through the checkering, it may have happened on its way to you.
