King, right or wrong, here is what I think and why I am doing what I am doing.
ed's primary purpose here is to bait and troll. He takes great delight in provoking someone into a rant. He dislikes us and everybody else. He doesn't give a damn about any of the issues he trolls with, just that he can find someone to engage in a hateful exchange. I have seen the "just ignore him" advice many times. But there are so many people here that someone (and sometimes many) rises to the bait.
I have no idea if Dave Weber will take money to ban ed for good. But neither does ed. Since Dave has suspended ed three times it doesn't seem a far stretch of the imagination to me that one day he would get fed up and ban him for good. And the pledge money would certainly help Dave with the website. So, in my opinion, there is only an upside and no downside to the pledge drive.
I have always appreciated your manners and your ability to disagree agreeably. And it is my intent to disagree with you agreeably in this post.

Mike Here's a suggestion- I'll wager a "C" note that none of us who wish Ed would "Go gentle-man-like into the Good night (with apologies to the late Dylan Thomas)that we all would support Saint Jude's Children's Hospital, whether we be of the Catholic Faith or not- it is my favorite Charity, after that the Shriner's Burn Hospital units for children- so how about if instead of taking what Burger King of Canada calls a "bride" we give Dave permission to accumulate the funds, shit-can old Eddie Da Torch for now and forever, and then donate the money in his name to St. Jude's- I'll go a C note for that--

I'm not sure if that's a good analogy, Mike. You would be paying a doctor to perform an operation, a beneficial, straight business transaction.
You're offering money as a bribe to our host to dismiss permanently a member whose behaviour has been exemplary compared to others, a discriminatory action that would harm the integrity of the board.
Your enjoyment of the day doesn't enter into it. It's dishonest and a denial of the spirit of America. I don't believe you saw the flip-side of the "pledge" when you made it because pledge implies solemn fulfillment of higher values.
You're a good judge of higher values. But judges err, too!

Would the Masons, Knights of Columbus, Lions, Kiwanis and Oddfellows or any reputable charitable organization accept money knowing it was collected under these circumstances? Not in my country or in yours. None. Anger and aggravation should not deny a basic human right.
